Building a Response to the Crisis of Cancer in Africa


The American Cancer Society, IBM Health Corps, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, joined by the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, are hosting a discussion with the global health community about cancer in Africa.

The event will be at The National Press Club 529 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC on Thursday, Oct 20, 2016 from 9am-1pm .

The World Health Organization projects that by 2030, close to 1 million people will die of cancer each year in Sub-Saharan Africa. For every four people who die of HIV/AIDS, there will be three who die of cancer.

Despite the fact that the most common cancers in Sub-Saharan Africa are treatable, fewer than 10% receive any treatment - even simple pain relief. The global health community is just beginning to mount a response to the growing problem of cancer in Africa, tackling challenges related to commodity markets, laboratory capacity, and the health workforce.

Presentations and panel discussions will address opportunities to improve the market for cancer treatment, potential to adapt successful strategies from HIV and malaria programs, and the role that public and private sectors can play in the response. IBM Health Corps will present a new chemotherapy forecasting tool developed in collaboration with ACS and CHAI, which can be used to assist in national cancer procurement planning.
