, Trump, Europe and the Global Economy which analyzes the likely impact
of the Trump presidency. Madsen's conclusion is that markets have
overreacted, and that in 2017 geopolitical forces will temper current
optimism. Dr. Madsen just spoke on CNBC on the new Russian sanctions by
the US and today's recall of 35 diplomats, comparing that action to 51
expelled in 2001 and 80 by Reagan in 1986. The evolving US-China
relationship remains a focus of global concern. Economist Peter Navarro
will be nominated as Director of Trade and Industrial Policy. Industrial
policy doesn't sound very Republican, but the Council does remind me of
the old Ministry of International Trade & Industry (MITI) in Japan.
Navarro worked closely with Commerce Secretary nominee Wilbur Ross
during the campaign and co-authored a white paper

economic plan. His appointment has caused consternation in China, which
is facing a range of economic issues that the strong Trump dollar is
exacerbating. Add to this the planned stopover in the US by Taiwanese
President Tsai Ing-wen and tensions will be high even prior to
Inauguration Day. We wish you, your family, friends and colleagues a
