Tom Tancredo wins the gubernatorial nomination there. That's why the Democratic Governors Association's independent-expenditure arm in the state, Protect Colorado Values, is up with a six-figure statewide ad buy going after both Tancredo and former Rep. Bob Beauprez. In the Tancredo ad, the candidate is deemed "too conservative for Colorado": "Even as it's starting to work, Republican Tom Tancredo is still one of the country's strongest opponents of Obamacare," the ad says. "As governor, Tancredo would do everything in his power to undermine the law." The Beauprez ad suggests the candidate is a flip-flopping DC politician and points to his votes "for earmarks and spending bills while the national debt ballooned $2 trillion," and says he "supported the individual health care mandate that's the cornerstone of Obamacare." These ads sound a lot like what Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill did in 2012 to help influence the GOP primary in her race; POLITICO's Alex Isenstadt looked earlier this week at how Democrats have tried to meddle in GOP primaries this year as well ( http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b84705c490636a6e94de928259aca64a7fa0f1b9c7118307fc http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b84705c490636a6e94de928259aca64a7fa0f1b9c7118307fc ). A Democratic operative with knowledge of the buy said the ads are about "showing that the two Republican frontrunners are fatally flawed." Watch the Tancredo ad: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b89efa8f2a3b5e795db0576dc88c8a04551d47a9b80e5a71a3 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b89efa8f2a3b5e795db0576dc88c8a04551d47a9b80e5a71a3 and the Beauprez ad: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b8730397a422ada256d8beb860c372abfc1bd79d63440efc95 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b8730397a422ada256d8beb860c372abfc1bd79d63440efc95 Latest polling out of Colorado: Speaking of the Colorado gubernatorial primary, Beauprez released an internal poll, conducted by Magellan Strategies, that put him and Tancredo neck-and-neck for first place. Tancredo takes 27 percent in the poll, followed by Beauprez at 25 percent, Secretary of State Scott Gessler at 13 percent and former Senate Minority Leader Mike Kopp at 10 percent. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b8d76e28e83d91b56afdcea1bc80a046db82a3a940f86a7802 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b8d76e28e83d91b56afdcea1bc80a046db82a3a940f86a7802 VOTEVETS GEARS UP TO SPEND $5 MILLION IN SENATE RACES, via your Score correspondent: 'As veterans' issues and the Department of Veterans Affairs scandal put Democrats on the defensive, the outside group VoteVets will announce it's planning to spend $5 million in competitive Senate races this year - providing Democrats some much-needed cover. The effort begins Thursday with a $275,000 ad buy in Montana, boosting Democratic Sen. John Walsh, an Iraq war veteran. In an interview with POLITICO last week, VoteVets founder Jon Soltz said the next target will be Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who's locked in a tight race with Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes. ... Soltz said they're likely to get involved in the other races where red-state Democratic incumbents are fighting for reelection: Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana and North Carolina.' http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b83b261310a4abfb029bd05b62c29a0aa25ed52d5769d88ca7 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b83b261310a4abfb029bd05b62c29a0aa25ed52d5769d88ca7 As Mississippi gears up for a three-week slugfest, Stewart Mills talks up his "hunting camp doctrine" and Annette Bosworth has basically the worst day ever, here's POLITICO's Morning Score: your daily guide to the 2014 midterms. RATINGS CHANGES THIS WEEK: Sabato moves MS-Sen from "Safe Republican" to "Likely Republican" for the general and to "Leans McDaniel" for the runoff. In House races, Sabato moves CA-26 from "Likely Democratic" to "Leans Democratic," CA-25 (where two Republicans finished atop the primary field) from "Leans Republican" to "Safe Republican," IA-04 from "Safe Republican" to "Likely Republican," IA-02 from "Safe Democratic" to "Likely Democratic," and NJ-03 from "Toss-up" to "Leans Republican" ( http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b82133a2f1c0ddcc22bc1eac1cf5e70d3bdb7a84e3cd3687d8 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b82133a2f1c0ddcc22bc1eac1cf5e70d3bdb7a84e3cd3687d8 ). Cook shifts WI-Gov from "Lean Republican" to "Toss-up," and TX-Gov from "Solid Republican" to "Likely Republican" ( http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b8fffa945a0bf287a0db838fb74c5c6fab304d319c3f88e9df http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b8fffa945a0bf287a0db838fb74c5c6fab304d319c3f88e9df ). COCHRAN ALLIES GIRD FOR A FIGHT: POLITICO's Alex Burns reports on the thinking in Sen. Thad Cochran's camp regarding their strategy for the June 24 Mississippi GOP Senate runoff: "Cochran advisers and outside operatives supporting the campaign spent Wednesday huddled in closed-door meetings, assessing the path forward and beginning to lay out a strategy for the one-on-one race against their tea party opponent. Acknowledging that they face a difficult fight against McDaniel, Cochran allies sketched out the beginnings of a plan to take on the 41-year-old litigator. Several advisers, speaking candidly and anonymously, said that competing in the June 24 runoff will likely require the campaign to shift resources from television and radio advertising into pure get-out-the-vote operations. It will mean raising concerns about McDaniel's electability and delivering an issue-driven message about what McDaniel's policy views would really mean for Mississippi. Riskiest of all, it will involve reaching out to casual voters - including independents and Democrats - to swell the electorate with Mississippians who may not have participated in this week's first round of voting." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b88dbd13155e7c800faf934222fb12fceddf3fc972b3320ab2 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b88dbd13155e7c800faf934222fb12fceddf3fc972b3320ab2 -Mississippi money: Cochran and his allies didn't have much of a financial edge in the primary, per the Center for Public Integrity's Dave Levinthal: Cochran, between campaign dollars raised and outside money spent on his behalf, had $6.9 million, compared with $6.5 million for McDaniel. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b8ed5d5173ce0a5b1ae6b7f1e0d3a4ee9bdc6a7def1321f7a9 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b8ed5d5173ce0a5b1ae6b7f1e0d3a4ee9bdc6a7def1321f7a9 -McDaniel mischief?: Three people, including a 'high-ranking Chris McDaniel campaign official,' were found trapped in a courthouse where ballots were locked, prompting an investigation by the Hinds County Sheriff's Department. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b85361afeb76ecd80a3845ce575cc5ddab5d655a6329671f2a http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b85361afeb76ecd80a3845ce575cc5ddab5d655a6329671f2a WRAPPING UP LOOSE ENDS FROM LAST NIGHT'S RACES: When Score went out Wednesday morning, there were still a small handful of races that had yet to be called. We got clarity on most of those races today, though the votes are still being counted in two California House races. -In California's 33rd District, Democrat Wendy Greuel conceded the race, allowing Republican Elan Carr and state Sen. Ted Lieu to officially advance to the general election. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Carr was in first place with 22 percent of the vote, followed by Lieu at 19 percent and Greuel at 17 percent. -In Mississippi's 4th District, GOP Rep. Steven Palazzo was officially ruled the winner in his primary race against former Rep. Gene Taylor - and the race will not advance to a runoff. Palazzo received 50.5 percent of the vote, while Taylor came in at just under 45 percent. TODAY ON POLITICO - PETERS LAUDS FIRM AFTER STOCK BUY, via POLITICO's Byron Tau: 'Michigan Senate candidate Gary Peters heaped praise on the Dow Chemical corporation's work days after buying stock in the company, which has also donated to his campaign, according to financial information reviewed by POLITICO. Responding to an audience question on cap-and-trade legislation last week, the three-term Democratic congressman used the opportunity to single out the Michigan-based firm's efforts to develop renewable energy solutions.' http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b8135b6abb0f085974f9c2e6cf6436d428c151273c3ac2fd1c http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=2bf315b8500166b8135b6abb0f085974f9c2e6cf6436d428c151273c3ac2fd1c EXCLUSIVE - MILLS TOUTS 'FIX-IT' ATTITUDE IN NEW MN-08 AD: Stewart Mills, the Republican businessman challenging Rep. Rick Nolan (D-Minn.), is going up with another campaign ad on Friday, painting himself as a can-do candidate determined to fix Washington. "I guess I don't look like a typical politician, so people always ask me, why am I running for Congress?" asks Mills in the 30-second spot, shared first with POLITICO. Mills, 42, sports long blond hair that hits just below his jaw, and appears in the clip wearing hunting gear. "It starts with my family's hunting camp doctrine: If you complain about something, you get the job to fix it." The ad is the second installation in a six-figure ad buy, and will play in both the Twin Cities and Duluth media markets, according to his campaign manager. Mills, who was named to the National Republican Congressional Committee's "Young Guns" program, which identifies competitive Republican midterm candidates, concludes that "this hunting camp could teach Washington a thing or two."
