WHY SHOULD THE BOSS LISTEN TO YOU? James Lukaszewski tells us in his book we each should become a “verbal visionary.” “Verbal skill is the main tool of leaders – speaking effectively, describing the future, giving instructions, and teaching others. People exercise leadership mostly through verbally expressed ideas, concepts, and stories. Many elements of successful advice giving and advising also demand excellent verbal skill. How are your verbal skills?”

4. BEING A GOOD MENTOR. One of ten ways Blue Sky Coaching from Australia says you can be a good mentor is to “Ask open questions.” We know from our experiences with journalism that we learn the most by asking open-ended questions. The same is true in mentoring, but the mentee should be the primary beneficiary. “Asking your mentee open questions will help you as a mentor to identify their real needs, values and passions. It’s also a great way to get your mentee to think through situations themselves and draw out the consequences of the various choices or courses of action they can take. During these conversations, you can share your wisdom, without making decisions for (them).”

5. STRATEGIC THINKING. Leadership expert Liane Davey tells readers how to improve their strategic thinking skills in a blog posted to Harvard Business Review online. http://blogs.hbr.org/2014/01/strengthen-your-strategic-thinking-muscles/

6. DINFOS NEWS:

A. PAQC-ADL RESIDENCY COURSES. The PAQC-ADL Residency (R) Course is offered twice this summer: 11-22 August for class 010 and 14-26 September for class 020. The August class is nearly full, but seats are still available for the September option. Students must complete all Non-Residency (NR) course requirements before they can be officially registered for the R course. Students have two years to complete the R course once they have successfully completed NR. Neither credit nor certificate is given until the student passes the Residency course. Contact Chris Dunne to request enrollment.

B. JOINT SENIOR PA COURSE GETS RAVE REVIEWS. CAPT Anastasia Quanbeck and CDRs Kyra Hawn, Thurraya Kent and Gary Ross finished the two-week JSPAC at DINFOS on 9 May. They said great things about this course, which is designed for O-5/6s, E-8/9s and GS-14/15s. Here are several of their comments:

“It was a great opportunity to set aside day to day churn to think big picture strategic thoughts.”

“Subject matter experts were amazingly experienced and conversant in their field. The level of exposure was impressive and humbling. I felt honored to be given such tremendous access and the opportunity to engage as such insightful influential levels of government.”

“The intensity of this course surprised me. It overflowed with quality material and expert presentations; not a moment was wasted!”

“The camaraderie and learning through active dialog with classmates (is what benefited me the most.)”

“The course allowed me to connect many professional experiences and critically analyze problems through a much more comprehensive lens.”

JSPAC is held four times each year at DINFOS. Starting FY2015, JSPAC and the similar course for senior enlisted (JSEPAC) will be merged. The last JSEPAC, runs 21 July through 5 August. Quotas are still available. The 2015 JSPACs start on 5 January, 23 March, 6 July and 14 September. Contact Chris Dunne to sign up. Check with your detailer to see if you can attend one of these between duty stations. Learn about the course at http://www.dinfos.dma.mil/dinfosweb/CourseInfo/tpi/JSPAC.pdf?

C. VISUAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT (VIM) COURSE GOES ONLINE. The first distance learning version of VIM begins 1 October. The online-only course is six weeks long and will be offered three times in FY15. Contact your detailer to request enrollment.

D. CHINFO REQUESTS WRITING COURSE. In late April, CHINFO formally requested DINFOS to develop a new course focused on development of intermediate to advanced writing skills for officers, enlisted and civilians. The proposal for the course includes teaching skills in research, interviewing, speechwriting, storytelling, professional journal articles, opinion pieces and others. CHINFO recommended the course be offered primarily, if not solely, through distance learning.

7. JOINT HUMANITARIAN OPERATIONS COURSE (JHOC). Chris Dunne attended the JHOC on 13-14 May in D.C. and says the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) training is “outstanding.” The instructors are knowledgeable and very engaging. Through guest speakers, case study reviews, group exercises, informal quizzes and discussions you learn about the disaster declaration process, chain of command, specific responsibilities of all parties in Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief operations and much more. In addition to a course workbook to capture your ideas and the thoughts of others, each student received a copy of USAID's Field Operations Guide. The 7.5 by 4 inch waterproof guide is the go-to-guide of disaster relief operations and is routinely used by USAID representatives in the field. Students also received a DVD full of additional resource materials. Classes are held in D.C. and elsewhere. To learn where and when, and how to register, email JHOC@usaid.gov

8. SOCIAL MEDIA MAP 2014.
