Did you know:

- The cost of a college education has gone up 300% in the past three decades
- Student loan debt now exceeds $1.2 trillion in America -- more than credit card debt
- As of 2012, college graduates carried an average of $29,000 in student loan debt

College costs have become debilitating. Some student loans have an interest rate of nearly 10%. It's not sustainable.

In the days ahead, the Senate will consider a plan to allow graduates holding loans with high interest rates to refinance to current levels. An estimated 250,000 graduates in Nevada alone would be allowed to refinance their loans, saving them an average of $4,000 in interest.

It's the right thing to do. So of course, we're expecting obstructionists in the Senate to block this plan from moving forward.

Let obstructionists in the Senate know that you stand with America's college graduates. Sign the petition to support student loan refinancing.

Nevada students go to college with the hopes of gaining an education that will better prepare them for their future. I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for the opportunities a college education gave me.

There is nothing wrong with taking out student loans, particularly federal loans where your rate cannot change. But we need to help our graduates get a handle on astronomical interest rates that are driving far too many of them into financial instability.
