"Gary is a principled conservative who will be a respected voice in Congress on day one," Citizens United President David Bossie says in a statement. "He is ready to confront our nation's addiction to wasteful spending and make the tough budgetary decisions in order to get us back on the right fiscal path." Citizens United isn't the only conservative group to back Palmer: the Club for Growth endorsed him earlier this week. Palmer faces Paul DeMarco in the July 15 runoff. MISSISSIPPI UPDATE - NEW COCHRAN AD, MCDANIEL POLL: As the June 24 runoff looms in Mississippi's marquee GOP Senate primary, Sen. Thad Cochran is getting a boost from a former Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott, while state Sen. Chris McDaniel's campaign released a new internal poll showing the challenger ahead of the incumbent by 8 points. In the latest TV ad ( http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a1c894fa5bdfc2a0a9cc4772dd13803af5bfc7dde6dba62a62 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a1c894fa5bdfc2a0a9cc4772dd13803af5bfc7dde6dba62a62 ) from Cochran's campaign, Lott says Cochran is necessary to keep some of the state's top federal funding and contracts in place, saying the election is about "our future." Meanwhile, McDaniel's campaign released an internal polling memo from the GOP firm WPA Research, which found McDaniel leading Cochran, 49 percent to 41 percent. McDaniel leads by a wide margin among "very conservative" voters, but he also leads among self-identified independents (read the memo: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a1e8996a333c28eb9770ef152fc59770012eef372cb3fa5bb6 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a1e8996a333c28eb9770ef152fc59770012eef372cb3fa5bb6 ). Here's Score's look at how top political players and groups involved (or not involved) in the Cantor results should answer this question: Are you better off now than you were a week ago? YES: (1) Economics professor David Brat, who went from being a nobody to the guy who took down the House majority leader; (2) Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who is likely to get a big job boost with Cantor's departure as majority leader; and (3) radio host Laura Ingraham, who's getting a lot of the credit for Brat's victory as one of the few national figures who worked on his behalf. NO: (1) McLaughlin & Associates, the polling firm that got Cantor's numbers so wrong and prompted a discussion about the value of internal polls; (2) conservative and tea party groups like Senate Conservatives Fund and the Club for Growth, which missed an opportunity to get involved in the race and back Brat before he won; and (3) pro-immigration reform House Republicans such as California's David Valadao, who now have to work harder to persuade constituents that reform is a realistic near-term goal. ** With 240 million weekly listeners across the nation, Katz Radio Group has the largest reach of any radio representation company in America, with more than 4,000 radio stations and thousands of digital platforms.Katz Radio Group delivers every station, in every market, on every platform, with one call. Contact: mailto:Patrick.McGee@katzradiogroup.com Patrick.McGee@katzradiogroup.com ** TODAY ON POLITICO - BEHIND CANTOR'S CAMPAIGN MELTDOWN: POLITICO's James Hohmann and Jake Sherman report: "The failure of one of the most powerful politicians in the country to recognize a threat from a college professor and political neophyte contributed to Cantor's stunning loss on Tuesday. But interviews with dozens of Cantor's current and former staffers, veteran GOP strategists, outside groups and constituents portray a campaign that was bedeviled from the start by Cantor's preoccupation with reaching the pinnacle of House leadership. He was tending more to a constituency on Capitol Hill and his monied supporters, voters said, than to the actual constituents in Virginia's 7th District, which is in and around Richmond. An examination of the campaign also found that Dave Brat was viewed as more of a nuisance than a threat, someone who could be swatted away in a barrage of TV ads and mailings. In example after example, Cantor failed to adhere to campaign basics such as assuaging advocacy groups in the district and mollifying tea partyers. While alarm bells should have been going off, the congressman was reassured by his pollster, whose final internal showed him winning with around 62 percent." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a16061b4a1d87f8fa7378628823ccfae5df237d39deda58136 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a16061b4a1d87f8fa7378628823ccfae5df237d39deda58136 ICYMI - DAVE BRAT: THE MAN WHO UPENDED THE GOP: POLITICO's David Nather, Sarah Wheaton, and Alex Isenstadt report: "The day after Dave Brat upended the political world by toppling the Republican expecting to be the next House Speaker, his 23-year-old campaign manager was so swamped that he didn't even return a call for his boss from Speaker John Boehner's office. There were, in fact, thousands more phone messages, he said, from Wolf Blitzer to Diane Sawyer. ... 'We're not going to be making any statements until we get professional PR help' Werrell said in an interview, clearly more in crisis mode than celebratory mode on Wednesday in his tiny campaign office in a strip mall here. ... If his aide, who operated from a single flip phone, was overwhelmed, imagine the unlikely winner.' http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a16e82b0c10f74dbe001d71b3a59b3c2a90de2aca21ad26187 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a16e82b0c10f74dbe001d71b3a59b3c2a90de2aca21ad26187 COBURN RIPS SCF ADS AGAINST LANKFORD, via POLITICO's Burgess Everett: "Retiring Sen. Tom Coburn lashed out at outside groups' ads attacking Rep. James Lankford in the Oklahoma GOP primary to replace him next year, calling them untruthful and representative of politics in its 'very worst form.' Coburn singled out negative ads by Senate Conservatives Fund and Oklahomans for a Conservative Future aimed at boosting the candidacy of tea party darling T.W. Shannon, the former state House speaker who's drawn the support of national conservatives like Sarah Palin and Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah). ... Coburn has not endorsed in the race but has become increasingly critical of the nationalization of the Shannon-Lankford match-up in deep-red Oklahoma. On Thursday, he came as close as he's come to OK'ing Lankford's candidacy, praising him as a 'man of absolute integrity' and championing the second-term House member's dedication to government oversight - the same subject that Coburn's spent much of his long congressional career on. He had little to say about Shannon." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a1e491fbfbaa79d2dc21c63311f0d26e06532db6667eef5785 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a1e491fbfbaa79d2dc21c63311f0d26e06532db6667eef5785 FIRST LOOK - GIFFORDS PAC MAKES STAFF MOVES: Americans for Responsible Solutions' executive director and Giffords' former congressional chief of staff, Pia Carusone, is moving into a senior-adviser role and taking a partnership at The Campaign Group in a new Washington office, ARS said Friday. Development director Hayley Zachary will become executive director, while policy hand Peter Ambler is now running the (c)(4). "The political and legislative environment in Congress make this work extremely challenging, but we know Hayley and Peter's persistence and optimism will serve as a compass for us all in this next chapter," said Mark Kelly, Giffords' husband and a founder of the group, in a statement. AK-SEN POLL - SULLIVAN UP 9: Republican Dan Sullivan's favorable primary polls are proceeding apace. In the latest, released Thursday by the Daily Caller/Vox Populi, he led Mead Treadwell 32 percent to 23 percent. Joe Miller trailed with 15 percent. Sullivan is evidently comfortable enough to be spending the lion's share of his time focusing on Democratic Sen. Mark Begich these days, including a continued push for Begich to urge outside groups to stay off the airwaves. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a1e590b465b66f393a4d64d441b947b6b520221674f9d03d13 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=66993aacb43744a1e590b465b66f393a4d64d441b947b6b520221674f9d03d13 FACTCECK.ORG 'WHOPPER OF THE WEEK': Senate Majority PAC gets the nod this week for making some audaciously false claims about Rep. Bill Cassidy. The Democratic super PAC says in a TV ad that the Louisiana Republican once sponsored a bill to set up "government-run health care" in the state. That's pure invention; Cassidy's bill did nothing of the sort. The ad also says Cassidy argued for "automatic Obamacare registration," when he didn't. Cassidy actually called for repealing the law and enrolling the uninsured in a scaled-back GOP alternative. Cassidy is considered Sen. Mary Landrieu's top Republican challenger in the fall election.
