He is former dean of the School of Social Work at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. ** Using Mind Fitness to Build Resilience

Tuesday, Jan. 29: Security Studies Program core faculty member Dr. Elizabeth Stanley will discuss her research in mind fitness, neuroplasticity and resilience. Mind fitness has much in common with physical fitness. Just like physical fitness relies on repeated exercises to generate specific muscular and cardiovascular changes, mind fitness relies on specific exercises to create changes in the structure and function of the brain. And just as the body is physically changed by exercise, areas of the brain may shrink or expand -- become more or less functional -- based on experience and training. This is known as neuroplasticity. Armed with this understanding and the right approach, it's possible to literally rewire the brain to be more effective and resilient. ** Jama’at al Tabligh: An example of Islamic Cooperation

The renewal of Central Asian Islam is generally traced to influences emanating from Middle Eastern countries as well as to indigenous factors. This lecture will focus on equally important influences from the Indian subcontinent, notably the Jama’at al Tabligh. The history, current prospects and geopolitical significance of this development will be considered for Central Asia, focusing on Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, where the organization is the most active and visible.
