Tuesday - June 3, 2014 From the School This Week's Query What did I learn about myself this year, and how can I keep that in mind as I look forward to next year? Notes from Sally We welcome Connor Jones McCourt, son of 6th grade teacher Gretchen McCourt. Connor was born last Tuesday and all are doing well! Congratulations to the winning poets of The Dare to Dream … Change the World Second Annual Writing Contest! Grand Prize Winner: Emma Rippey. Other finalists: Christin Clyburn, Colleen Zeugin, Lili Sundberg, Quinn Lehrman, and Zayd Ali. This morning is the annual 5/6 track meet. Parents are welcome to attend. Today is also the final day for 7/8 academic classes. Tomorrow is the final day for 5/6 PE, and students will be cleaning out their gym lockers. 7th graders will be with their teams tomorrow, while 8th graders have their Math exam and practice for graduation.Thursday is a full day of school, with activities varying by grade level. Dismissal will follow the final assembly, at 3:30 PM. Aftercare is in session on Thursday, and the shuttle bus will run. Middle School students with 4th grade siblings who wish to attend the Lower School graduation event onJune 5th are welcome to do that; please coordinate arrangements with the homeroom teacher or advisor. Laptops were collected from all Middle School students yesterday. Students who are missing items will be notified by Tracie Yorke. All library materials are also now due, and materials must be returned and fines paid before yearbooks will be given out. The Middle School collects and reuses all hard-bound textbooks to save money and resources. Please look around the house and send in those texts to be collected by the classroom teachers. Our thanks, too, to our many Parent Volunteers, especially those who have taken shifts at the front desk. We depend on you to help us keep up with the daily tasks in the office. Please contact Julia Porter if you are interested in this opportunity for next year: porterj@sidwell.edu. We also send a hearty thanks to all who have provided snacks for our faculty meetings. We feel well taken care of! Final reports for the year will be posted on line during the week of June 16th. Families who have financial holds, missing library books, or missing laptop components will not have reports posted. Homeroom and team placement for rising 5th, 6th, and 7th graders will be sent in early July. We will also post a list of supplies that students will need for next year on the website by mid-July. Final class placement information for 8th graders going on to the Upper School will be part of the comment in the final report card for math, science, and language. The Middle School Office will be open all summer, although we will take turns getting some vacation days in. Anne Kennedy and Michelle Parker do not work full time in the summer but will answer messages and email periodically. Always contact the main number if you need something right away. On behalf of all of us here in the Middle School, we wish you a restful and happy summer! It is such a privilege to work with our wonderful students and families, and we will miss seeing you over these summer months! 5th Grade Knighting Ceremony The 2014 fifth grade joins a longstanding tradition of knighthood at Sidwell Friends. Last week, the students became the 41st group to be knighted at the completion of their first year of Middle School.
