The peace testimony is much more than a repudiation of war and violence. To many Quakers, it represents a quest to live one's life intentionally and recognize and embrace the power of love. As Martin Luther King, Jr. explained, "Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal." We will open our discussion on peace with chapter six of Robert Lawrence Smith's A Quaker Book of Wisdom and then broaden our conversation by looking at the ideas espoused by Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mohandas Gandhi. Topics into which we might delve include identifying the many ways we work toward peace in our own hearts, homes, school, work, and larger world on a daily basis; and sharing with and demonstrating to our children these actions so that they can absorb the lessons of peace. To download PDF files of the select readings, please visit the QLC page in the Parents' Portal: http://www.sidwell.edu/parents/parents-association/committees/quaker-life-committee/2012-quaker-reading-groups/index.aspx. Community Meeting for Worship All Sidwell Friends Community Meeting for Worship Please join us for an All-Community Meeting for Worship in the new Robert L. Smith Meeting Room on the Wisconsin Avenue campus. Sidwell Friends invites parents, alumni, past parents, students, and employees to gather for silence and quiet reflection. Sunday, March 10, 2013 10:30 a.m. Robert L. Smith Meeting Room Quaker Quotes In June of 1958 Martin Luther King, Jr addressed a gathering of Quakers and said: "All of us are desirous of living the well-adjusted life. I know I am, and we must be concerned about living a well-adjusted life in order to avoid neurotic and schizophrenic personalities. But I say to you... that there are certain things within our social order to which I am proud to be maladjusted, and I call upon you to be maladjusted to all of these things. I never intend to become adjusted to segregation and discrimination. I never intend to adjust myself to the viciousness of mob rule. I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions which take necessities from the masses to give luxuries to the classes. I never intend to adjust myself to the madness of militarism and the self-defeating effects of physical violence...let us continue, my friends, going on and on toward that great city where all men will live together as brothers in respected dignity and worth of all human personality. This will be a great day, a day, figuratively speaking, when the "morning stars will sing together, and the sons of God will shout for joy."
