I just left a committee hearing in the General Assembly, where I urged the House of Delegates to repeal Maryland’s death penalty.

We have a strong justice system filled with men and women working each and every day to do what’s right and keep our neighborhoods safe.

But we can never stop striving to become a more just society.

Repealing Maryland’s death penalty is about our values. We can balance the enforcement of justice and the protection of innocence; life without the possibility of parole is an alternative. Our capital punishment system is not flawless, and the chance of killing even one innocent person is just not acceptable – that is not justice.

I need your help to send that message. Add your name, and let every member of the Maryland General Assembly know that it's time to repeal the death penalty.

Make no mistake: Abolishing the death penalty would not dishonor the victims of murderous acts. We will remain committed to swift and severe punishment for those convicted of those horrible crimes.

But the status quo cannot stand. Since 1977, 140 death row inmates nationwide have been exonerated due to evidence of a wrongful conviction.

The only way to prevent the execution of innocent defendants is to abolish the death penalty altogether. Saving one innocent life is worth it. But I need your help to move the General Assembly to action. This cannot wait.

I believe we have a responsibility to our young people to build a state where fairness, truth and justice are at the core of our beliefs. We must never stop working toward it.
