Kerry will likely be confirmed quickly, and the special election to fill his Senate seat will begin.

Council for a Livable World has endorsed a remarkable candidate to serve alongside Elizabeth Warren as the next senator from Massachusetts: Representative Edward Markey (D).

Markey has been a key House leader on nuclear weapons issues for decades. From leading the fight for a freeze on new nuclear weapons in the 1980s to his call last year for a $100 billion cut in the nuclear weapons budget, he has been the person to work with on arms control issues in the House of Representatives.

He began advocating for an end to all nuclear weapons explosive testing in the 1980s and wants to work for ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty this year.

But to get to the Senate, Markey may face a Democratic primary and then likely confront former Republican Senator Scott Brown, who, despite his defeat by Elizabeth Warren this past November, remains well-known and liked in the state.
