Please have them arrive 15 mins early to set up and settle in! > > Class will follow as usual. > > Also, see this message below about a collection tomorrow; > Since 2011 the number of children arriving in the United States unaccompanied has risen dramatically. According to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, 90,000 children are expected to arrive in the U.S. by the end of September. The vast majority of these children are coming from the Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Although we don’t know why any individual child makes this dangerous trek, there are a variety of factors that seem to be leading to the increased migration generally: lack of strong social institutions and civil society support, violence, and lack of viable economic and educational opportunities. > So far this year about 4,500 children have been reunited with parents or relatives in the DC-MD-VA metro area. Those children still face immigration proceedings, but at least they may wait in the care of relatives. In addition to these children, more and more children are beginning to arrive in the metro area who do not have family to reunite with and who will await their immigration proceedings in detention. > To make these children feel a little at home, the Archdiocese would like to give them “welcome packs” of basic hygiene products and toiletries (e.g., shampoo, conditioner, comb, brush, toothpaste, and toothbrush). Holy Trinity will participate in this effort. Thus, we are asking each child and her/his family to make a welcome pack and bring it to his/her class mass. > > Best, > Evely
