Dear Friends:The recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, and now New York, have affected our entire country in deep and profound ways. Their impact has clearly been felt here at Sidwell Friends School. While we must accept that we do not have all of the answers to the complex questions that are being raised, we recognize the ongoing work necessary to achieve equity and justice.The deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner and the resulting grand jury decisions have been difficult to process. Throughout the School, teachers are supporting children as they seek answers to challenging questions. Lower School teachers will respond to student questions in developmentally appropriate ways but will refrain from initiating discussions of these events. In the Middle School, students and teachers are taking time in homeroom and advisory, in classrooms, and in the context of Meeting for Worship to reflect on these difficult situations.This morning, at the start of Upper School Meeting for Worship, students presented the following query: “In the face of injustice, how can we promote fairness and seek justice in our local community and around the world?” Many students rose to share their thoughts on race and justice in America.Despite the challenges that lie ahead, a conversation has begun. As a Quaker school, we remain committed to seeking truth and to offering safe spaces for both students and adults to engage in meaningful dialogue and personal reflection.
