Tuesday - February 8, 2011 From the School This Week's Query Is it worth lying to keep a friend?Notes from Sally This week’s assembly: Upper School Dance Ensemble. 7/8 will also have a Chinese New Year assembly on Thursday in the Drama Studio at 12:50. CTP testing continues today and tomorrow. Students in grades 6-8 may use a calculator on the math portions of the test given tomorrow – please help them remember to bring one. The grading period for fifth grade choral music and all eighth grade arts classes is now over. Reports for these subjects have been posted in Educator Online. Our evening with Stephen Balkam, cancelled because of the weather a couple of weeks ago, has been rescheduled for Tuesday evening, February 22nd. Please mark your calendars! Congratulations to the “mathletes” of Sidwell Friends, who recently tied for first place as a team at the second middle school math meet of the year, held at St. Patrick’s Episcopal School on February 1st. Top scorers included 8th graders Gigi Stark and Yasmin Siahpoosh, 7th Graders David Hauge and Giri Srinivasan, and 6th graders Alan Zhang, Amal Mattoo, and Luke Oh. In other math news, all 6,7, and 8th grade students will participate in the Maryland Math League contest next week. This half hour written activity is a competition among students in both public and private schools in the area. The MS Diversity Conference, originally scheduled for January 27th, will take place on March 1st. Vertical Voices will perform and students registered for the original date were re-registered for the March date. Please contact Alexa Abdelatey, Ann-Baron Carneal, Lauren Phillips, Tim Reagan or Leslie Segal if you have questions. If you drop off on 37th Street in the morning, you have probably noticed that the lines are long these days. We still have a couple of piles of snow that are narrowing the carpool lane, but it’s also a good time for reminders about dropping off in that area. Please pull all the way forward (to the end of the ramp at the southernmost snow pile!) to drop off your child. I know that kids often have projects or other things to bring in, but if they can hop out as quickly as possible, that will help the line move along. Remember – no U-turns on the street or in the Hearst driveway – keep moving southward as you exit the neighborhood. Thanks so much!Instrumental Music Notes Aladdin Pit Band Monday and Wednesday 3:45-5:00 Rm 101 5/6 String Ensemble Wednesday Rehearsal Period Rm 101 7/8 String Ensemble Wednesday Rehearsal Period Rm 101 Jazz/Rock Band Thursday 3:45-5:00 Rm 101 Choral Music Notes ***There will NOT be Boys Ensemble on Wednesday morning (CTPs) Wednesday, February 9th: Girls Ensemble during Rehearsal PeriodMiddle Years - February 2011 middle_years_2-11.pdfRead the latest issue of Middle Years, a newsletter for parents of middle schoolers.
