Bronislaw Komorowski, Poland’s president, meets French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel, German chancellor, to discuss relations with eastern Europe and Poland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union from July 1. Chamber hosts Obama Barack Obama, US president, addresses the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington to discuss the economy and job creation. Japan resumes trade talks Australia and Japan restart talks in Tokyo on a bilateral free-trade agreement that stalled last April. Discussions over four days are due to cover goods and services, investment, government procurement, energy and mineral resources. Mining sector assembles Mining Indaba, the annual conference for mining professionals, begins in Cape Town, South Africa (until February 10). It includes sessions on technology, markets and financing. Church body meets The General Synod, the national assembly of the Church of England, meets in London for three days of discussions. Tuesday FEBRUARY 8 Qatar open for business Business opportunities and projects in Qatar, including the investment plan for the 2022 World Cup, are outlined at the two-day Qatar Projects conference in Doha. Schemes to be examined include electricity, water desalination, water re-use, road, railway, port and airport developments. Picasso pitched at £18m A Picasso painting, “La Lecture”, is expected to sell for £12m-£18m ($19m-$29m) at a Sotheby’s auction in London. Farm equipment on show World Ag Expo, the leading US agricultural show, begins its three-day run in Tulare, California. More than 1,500 exhibitors will display farming equipment, chemicals and technology. Skiing takes world stage The biennial World Alpine Ski Championships begin in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany (until February 20). Wednesday FEBRUARY 9 Asia air show Aero India, one of Asia’s leading aerospace, defence and civil aviation exhibitions, begins its five-day run at Bangalore. Census begins in India The country begins its first national census for 10 years. Auditing in the spotlight A two-day conference on financial reporting and auditing opens in Brussels, staged by the European Commission. The event addresses the setting and applying of international standards, and how to improve the European audit market. Capital markets analysed “What is Next for European Capital Markets?” is the title of a report to be launched by the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels. Speakers will address the report’s topics, which include transparency, market structure, and the provision of investment services. Inspiring employees The Employee Engagement Conference, which aims to offer new ways to retain and motivate employees, takes place in Manchester. It is organised by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Clean transport promoted Shai Agassi, founder of the Better Place company that produces all-electric cars, speaks on “Green Transport in the 21st Century” at the Policy Exchange think-tank in London. Gauguin for sale “Nature morte à ‘L’Espérance’”, a painting by Paul Gauguin, is expected to fetch £7m-£10m ($11m-$16m) at a Christie’s auction in London. The sale also includes works by Picasso, Pissarro, Moore and Monet. Sustainable food debated The UK Soil Association’s two-day annual conference begins in Manchester, to consider how to achieve a sustainable food supply. Speakers include Caroline Spelman, UK environment secretary, and Mark Price, managing director of Waitrose supermarkets. Feast of prizes on offer The annual Grocer Food and Drink Awards are announced in London, honouring products for their taste, packaging, brand impact, labelling and value for money. Thursday FEBRUARY 10 Chemicals sector analysed A conference on the European chemicals industry takes place in Brussels, organised by the European Commission. It will assess the state of the industry, identify examples of best practice and future steps to aid the sector. Procurement in austerity “Procurement 2011: Delivering Better for Less”, is a conference in London for public sector purchasing professionals focusing on how efficiencies can be gained in an era of austerity. Film time in Berlin The Berlin Film Festival opens, featuring new films from throughout the world and a retrospective of the work of the late Ingmar Bergman. Friday FEBRUARY 11 Attention called to 112 Events take place across Europe to raise awareness among travellers of the single emergency number applicable in all European Union countries, 112. Saturday FEBRUARY 12 Six Nations rugby matches England play Italy at Twickenham and Scotland face Wales at Murrayfield in the Six Nations rugby union tournament. On Sunday, Ireland host France in Dublin. Sunday FEBRUARY 13 New York hosts toy show Toy Fair, the trade show, opens in New York (until February 16). Bafta honours presented The British Academy of Television and Arts holds its annual awards ceremony in London.
