Dear Robert,

Last night, President Obama laid out an ambitious agenda for winning the future by out-educating, out-innovating, and out-building our competitors abroad.

I'm ready to carry that agenda forward in the Senate -- but Republicans are intent on taking us backwards.

If you stayed tuned to hear the GOP response last night, you heard from the Republicans' budget chief, whose plan would eliminate Social Security, bring back the failed Bush economic plan, and actually make our deficit crisis worse.

Meanwhile, the Republicans' top priority isn't creating jobs or balancing the budget -- it's re-litigating the health care debate and seeking to repeal the consumer protections, tax cuts, and deficit reductions we passed last year.

I hope they listened to what the President said last night. We can't afford to play political games, not when our future competitiveness hangs in the balance. We need to start making the right investments in education, infrastructure, research and development -- and getting our fiscal house in order so that debt doesn't hold the next generation back.

The President has set a tremendous example by urging us to work together across the aisle, and I'm ready to do just that. But I'm resolute in my commitment to move forward, not back. And if Republicans want to prove to the American people that they're serious about our future, they'll turn their backs on the failed policies and shameless politics of their recent past and join us in moving forward towards a stronger union.
