Professor Benjamin Foster, MA '73, PhD '75 on "Killing in the Name of God: Historical Perspectives on ISIS"

Benjamin R. Foster is Laffan Professor of Assyriology and Babylonian Literature at Yale. Professor Foster received his MA and PhD from Yale University. His research interests focus on cuneiform literature and the social and economic history of Mesopotamia, and notably, he published a translation of The Epic of Gilgamesh in 2001, and co-authored the book Iraq: Beyond the Headlines in 2005.

This talk will survey the formation, ideology, and appeal of the self-styled "Islamic State," with particular attention to factors that set it apart from other militarist Muslim groups.

Join us for our sampling of Bodega Garzón Wines from Uruguay at the Club. We will taste Albariño Reserve, Sauvignon Blanc, Marselan Reserve, and Tannat Single Vineyard from Bodega Garzón Wines.

Easter Brunch

Sunday, April 1, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm

Bring your loved ones to the Club for our annual Easter Brunch, where you will find the Easter Bunny and a delicious buffet full of traditional favorites. Please make your reservations online. Brunch is $65 for adults, $30 for children ages five to ten, and complimentary for children four years and younger, exclusive of beverages, tax, and gratuity.

Please specify the age of children in your reservation, and let us know if you have any special requests, including high chairs. All sales are final by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, March 28. All cancellations and no-shows after that point will be charged in full.

Spring Fitness Challenge

Monday, April 2 – Monday, April 30

Join fellow members as you compete in the Spring Fitness Challenge.
Members taking part in the five-week competition will record workouts as well as the number of miles they run, bike, or swim. The competition is self-tracked by members and should be reported to athletics staff each week.

There will be a winner and two runners up for both men and women. The grand prize is a trophy with selected Pro Shop merchandise.

Children's Crazy Hat Party

After the success and fun of our family event last spring, the Club will once again host a Crazy Hat Party! The Library is a space that can wear many hats and to celebrate, its opening its doors on Saturday, April 14 for a family-friendly day of activities.

Yale Club Members will lend their talents for readings of some classic picture books celebrating hats – crazy and otherwise – and kids will end the morning with a hat-making craft.

Lottery Tickets – Out of the East: A Medieval Feast at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Saturday, April 14, 6:30 pm

Join fellow members at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for an inspired medieval-style feast. Professor Paul Freedman, Chester D. Tripp Professor of History at Yale University will speak on the European demand for spices during the medieval period, while you enjoy a traditional 14^th-century spread at the Metropolitan Museum of Art including whole-roasted suckling pig paired with Abbey Ales. Tickets are $215 per person for this exclusive event.

Due to the extremely limited number of seats we have for this event, we will be holding a lottery for the tickets. Please make a reservation on the website to enter the lottery anytime between now and midnight on Monday, April 2. There is a maximum entry of two seats per member. Winners will be notified on Tuesday, April 3.

Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC

The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture.

As the museum is incredibly busy, the Club has obtained a select number of timed passes for members to access the museum. There is no charge for the pass, but as numbers are limited, reservations are required and will open promptly at 10:00 am on Wednesday, March 28 and are limited to two passes per member. To ensure that these extremely limited tickets do not go to waste, there will be a $25 no-show fee charge for any unused tickets.
