It’s About Love The transition from January to February is easily overlooked until we find ourselves arriving at the door of the 14th, Valentine’s Day. We forget about implementing our new year’s resolutions and instead buy candy. Instead of staying warm in the coldest month of the year, we venture out to dinner and dance shows or performances. At Career Transition For Dancers we are thinking about this day too, and ask you to join us to make a dancer your valentine with a donation to Career Transition For Dancers. As we think about our commitment to dancers, we ask ourselves; what if there were no dancers? What if it were not possible for a person to follow this intensively disciplined art form? What would the world be like? With the gloom of that thought, we ask ourselves; how do we continue to provide support for a community of gifted, passionate and vulnerable artistic individuals? And then we realize it’s you. In a time when newspapers like the NY Times, Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times are reporting a decrease in unemployment without explaining the story behind the numbers as an increase of temporary employment, it’s your partnership that makes the difference in the world of dance. With your support, Career Transition For Dancers continues its 26 year legacy of dream creation and career growth as a part of a sustainable solution to a gloomy economy. In every career counseling session, in support groups, in every workshop; we work with dancer-clients to develop their passions and expand their opportunities. Because at the end of the day, behind the numbers and statistics, we know it really is about loving what you do. Happy Valentine’s Day! - Alexander J. Dubé, Executive Director Kyme's Moves Story by AJahi Nicole Adams, Director of Development Career Transition For Dancers, National Office Based on a conversation with Kyme Sallid Educator and Career Transition For Dancers' Dancer-client Kyme Hersi Sallid knew at the age of two she was meant to perform but learned many lessons along the way. Peeking out from backstage on her aunt performing in the original cast of 'The Wiz', Kyme cemented her commitment to stand on the stage under the bright lights on 'The Great White Way'. Despite early pressures to become a classic ballerina, Kyme knew in the 70's more doors were open to young dancers of color in the musical theater world but, this still would be a long road. After years of training at Performing Arts High School and then entering SUNY Purchase to study her craft, Kyme struck a deal with her mother and left college after one year to work as a professional performer. Her first audition landed her a job in a summer stock show and everything kept rolling in after that: 'Bubbling Brown Sugar' European Tour, 'Sophisticated Ladies' National Tour, work in Paris and Rome, 'Black and Blue' Broadway, and film work with the then new and young director, Spike Lee. She was living the dream she had articulated at 13, but if you ask Kyme if this was all she wanted you might hear her say, "In knowing at 13 what I wanted to do, and getting to a point in my career where I was living it, was amazing. I always felt blessed and felt I had to give back to inspire others with what I knew. I always wanted to support young people, and always taught during my performing years." Along the way Kyme could point to moments of discomfort and needing change. As she puts it, "With transition, you can't be afraid to make a change; you have to just go for it. At 21, I said I didn't want to be in the chorus anymore and wanted to play roles. So I decided to stop auditioning for chorus roles. I was afraid about turning down work but it worked out. Later, I had a daughter and I was so destroyed about leaving her to do theatre work at night, so I made a transition to do television. But again this meant turning down work. It's scary. You just have to believe and go for it. You know it's time to make a change when you feel discomfort. Your job is to listen to it and go for it. Through all this, I was thankful for Career Transition For Dancers. The counselor helped me to focus my passions for teaching, plus gave me a scholarship to attend school. Career Transition For Dancers is great at wrapping around you and helping you through it all." Today, Kyme develops amazing young artists and scholars in cross-disciplines at her academy in Los Angeles. Students of the school have gone on to attend top schools and universities such as, NYU Tisch, UCLA, CalArts and Stanford. These things she accomplished because of her passion, talents, skills, education and support attained from Career Transition For Dancers. She continues to not fear transition and change while offering this advice to younger dancers; "know when you need someone in you corner, supporting you through your transformation, visit Career Transition For Dancers. They are wonderful with helping you focus your passions and desires. They really understand dancers."
