Message from the Executive Director In solidarity with the National School Walkout on March 14th, JVC Northwest staff paused our work and gathered outside at 10 am for 17 minutes to reflect and pray about the rampant gun violence that is ravaging our nation’s schools, homes, and places of worship. Another opportunity to work for peace and protest gun violence is coming up on March 24th in the March for our Lives. Solidarity onTap Socializing Meets Justice at a Bar Near You: Calif. and Mich. JVC Northwest, JVC (based in Baltimore, MD), and Ignatian Solidarity Network welcome those connected to the Jesuits and the spirituality of St. Ignatius to join us for socializing and social justice. Solidarity on Tap events gather folks for a short reflection from a speaker and connection with other members of the Ignatian family. Interested applicants can fill out this Online Interest Form to learn more; send the link to anyone who you think is a great candidate to be “ruined for life.” AmeriCorps Week: Providing Transitional Shelter Through Tiny Houses JV AmeriCorps Member Christina Estimé (Seattle, WA '17-18) “The current number of those experiencing homelessness on any given night in Seattle is estimated to be around 11,000 people, according to the 2017 Point in Time Count.” In our first AmeriCorps Week blog, JV AmeriCorps member Christina Estimé discusses her service providing “a stable, safe, and dignified community” for those experiencing homelessness at the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) in Seattle, Washington. Read her story here. #JVReflects: Extremists for Love Read the latest reflection from Seattle JV, Maddie Murphy “Extremism is usually regarded with negative connotations – we often apply it to people who hold ideologies that we deem to be dangerous or hateful. But Dr. King saw two sides to extremism. He asks in his letter, ‘Was not Jesus an extremist for love?’ As JVs, we are told to be extremists for love, to extend the table. But what I have come to learn is that we will meet extremists for love in the most unlikely of places and, in the most surprising and blessed of ways, will have tables extended to us as well…” In the latest JV Reflects blog post, current JV Maddie Murphy reflects on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for us to be "extremists for love" and what this call means to her as a JV. AmeriCorps Week: Addressing Food Security at Wallace Medical Concern JV AmeriCorps member Peter Fink (Gresham, OR '17-18) As Community Health Specialist at Wallace Medical Concern, JV AmeriCorps member Peter Fink has learned that food insecurity greatly affects his patients’ health and well-being. To better understand and respond to this issue, Peter is designing and implementing a workflow to more efficiently track and address food insecurity for patients at Wallace Medical Concern. Events, Resources, & Reflections Faith in Action Leadership and Mentoring Opportunities Today's the Deadline! Call To Action invites young Catholics (20-39 years old) to apply for the 20/30 Project for Leadership and Mentoring. This new program brings together young visionaries and change-makers across the country to support and inspire one another as part of a cohort, each discerning and initiating a project that helps make the church and world more just and inclusive. Each Young Leader will be paired with a mentor to accompany them as they explore how their Catholic faith intersects with the social needs around them. Questions? Journalist and scientist Sophia Chou has translated each mass shooting occurring in 2013-17 into a note, with the volume proportional to the number of deaths.
