Turkish leader visits Iran President Abdullah Gul begins a three-day visit to Iran. He will meet his counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad in Tehran to discuss economic relations, energy co-operation and Iran’s controversial nuclear programme. Mobile sector in Barcelona The Mobile World Congress begins in Barcelona (until February 17), assembling leading telecommunications executives for panel discussions, a conference and an exhibition of the latest products and technology. Tuesday FEBRUARY 15 EU finance meeting European Union finance ministers meet in Brussels to debate legislative proposals on budgetary surveillance of member states and correcting macroeconomic imbalances. Healthcare cost debated How to pay for long-term healthcare is the subject of a forum organised by the Reform think-tank in London. Speakers include Lord Warner of the Commission on Long Term Care and Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the Association of British Insurers. Unions hold pay forum “Pay Bargaining in an Age of Austerity” is the title of a conference staged by the UK Trades Union Congress and Incomes Data Services in London. It is designed to help unions prepare annual pay claims. European space odyssey The European Space Agency’s latest spaceship, named after 17th-century German astronomer Johannes Kepler, is scheduled to launch from Kourou, French Guiana, on its way to the International Space Station. The unmanned craft will deliver fuel and other essential supplies. Gillard visits New Zealand Julia Gillard, Australia’s prime minister, begins a two-day visit to New Zealand, where she will become the first foreign leader to address the country’s parliament. She will also hold talks with John Key, her counterpart. Farm issues aired The UK National Farmers’ Union stages its two-day annual conference in Birmingham. The European Union’s common agricultural policy, farm-based renewable energy and bovine TB are among topics for discussion. Coal’s role promoted The case for coal’s place as a necessary fuel is to be made at the Coal UK conference in London. Berlin hosts police summit Migration, integration and “European security in transition” are the themes of the two-day European Police Congress in Berlin. Wednesday FEBRUARY 16 Aspiring designs exhibited Nominations for the Brit Insurance Design of the Year Awards go on show at London’s Design Museum (until August 7). Warhol valued at £3m-£5m A large-scale self-portrait by Andy Warhol is expected to fetch £3m-£5m at a sale of postwar and contemporary art at Christie’s in London. Art world in Madrid Madrid’s International Contemporary Art Fair opens for its 30th edition (until February 20). Arab and African affairs A three-day political and economic forum focusing on Arab and African economies is staged by the Crans Montana Forum in Brussels. Thursday FEBRUARY 17 UK and global growth The State of the Economy conference in London examines issues such as Britain’s role in the global economy, the future of the euro and prospects for growth in various regions of the world. Speakers include Jim O’Neill, chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, and Graeme Leach, chief economist at the Institute of Directors. Mergers analysed The two-day Global Forum on Competition takes place in Paris. Run by the Organisation for European Co-operation and Development, it will focus on cross-border merger control and cartels. US science on show The annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science begins in Washington (until February 21). Nearly 1,000 scientists will present new research and developments. Coffee topics on the menu The African Fine Coffee Conference and Exhibition opens in Arusha, Tanzania (until February 19). Arts galore in Hong Kong Opera, dance, music and theatre all feature in the Hong Kong Arts Festival (until March 27). Friday FEBRUARY 18 G20 finance summit Finance ministers and central bank governors from the Group of 20 leading industrial nations begin a two-day meeting in Paris. Financial reforms and currency valuations are expected topics. Ugandans go to the polls Presidential and parliamentary elections are held in Uganda. Yoweri Museveni, president for the past 25 years, is once again standing for re-election Winter of fashion content London Fashion Week begins (until February 23), with designers showing their autumn and winter collections. Saturday FEBRUARY 19 Cricket World Cup begins The 2011 Cricket World Cup begins, with India the main host and matches also played in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The first match is Bangladesh hosting India in Mirpur. The final is on April 2. Sunday FEBRUARY 20 Middle East defence show The International Defence Exhibition and Conference opens in Abu Dhabi (until February 24), featuring more than 900 companies and demonstrations of equipment and weapons on land and water.
