During the tour, Obama will visit Brazil, Chile, and, to the surprise of many, El Salvador. Having the small Central American country on the list of destinations was unexpected, particularly because regional leaders such as Colombia and Argentina were left out of the agenda. Nonetheless, El Salvador merits the presidential visit as it shares close ties with the United States and is an important partner for the country's anti drug trafficking initiatives in the region, something some U.S. congressmen say is the most important aspect of U.S. - Latin American relations. The migratory and commercial ties that bind both countries are very strong. There are approximately 1.5 million Salvadorans living in the United States, more than 25% of the country's population. According to the Pew Hispanic Center, Salvadorans are the fourth largest latino population in the United States. Salvadoran migrants in the United States play a vital role in El Salvador's economy through the remittances they send back to the country: over $3 billion in 2010. Additionally, the U.S. is El Salvador's most important trade partner, as it is the destination of almost 50% of its exports and origin of more than one third of its imports. Obama touched on the key cornerstones of how the U.S. should move forward in order to take back the leadership role once so easily maintained in the states. And, leaders from across the globe were also applauding the President. If you scratch the surface of the President's speech, there are plenty of clues as to how the U.S. will approach their allies in Europe, Asia and South America. As this State of the Union speech clearly detailed, the U.S. is poised to launch an ambitious, global, imports-friendly era in 2011. Every month, we will bring you articles, photos, and updates about the numerous countries and issues we believe are most important. Global news is changing fast and we've got a handle on it. Now, so do you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bolstering the Ties that Bind, an Opportunity Emerges for U.S. and Europe Bolstering the Ties that Bind, an Opportunity Emerges for U.S. and Europe For the past year, as the global recession has stuck down countries around the world like a game of dominoes, the U.S. has been struggling with a setting a clear-cut, in-depth strategy with our Central European allies. And, at the same time, Central Europe has been reaching out to the U.S., in an effort to create a more intimate relationship. It's been a challenging year on multiple fronts. From the welcome rise of new - and tender - democracies in countries such as Kosovo to the chilling challenges of cyber security, nuclear proliferation in North Korea and Iran, and bloody civil wars in the Sudan and Congo, violence in Egypt and Tunisia, peace on the world stage has become an ever-shifting target. Dealing with juggling a myriad of issues is exactly what the U.S. has done best for decades. But something seems to be missing - and with a more comprehensive plan, the U.S. could make stronger friends and deeper bonds with Central European allies. Today, it's not enough to simply bolster security issues via NATO, using missile defense architecture in numerous countries. Military might and NATO contingency planning, as critical as they are, are only one piece of this global puzzle. French wine enthusiasts with small dreams stand side-by-side with large-scale business owners, as they purchase land in order to reap the sweet benefits of importing wine from the diverse climate of Argentina. Mendoza is considered to be the prime wine growing spot in Argentina, and 2 well known wine producers launched their first winery there in 1996. Kendall-Jackson of California and Concha y Toro of Chile both built large wineries in Mendoza, though Kendall-Jackson left the country while Concha y Toro found international success in its Argentine wine venture. Now, after 14 years, the Trivento subsidiary of the Concha y Toro brand is the largest exporter of wine in all of Argentina - no small feat. Currently, Triventa exports to 93 countries. What investors are discovering in this region rich with fertile soil and a climate perfect for growing wine grapes is an old world cultural style planted deeply in Argentine roots. Trivento is run by a Chilean manager, who said being the only Chilean at the company that employs 700 Argentine residents is always enjoyable. "Our winemaker, our vineyard manager, everyone is from Argentina," he said. "That's why Trivento has a 100 percent Argentine identity." Another profitable wine venture in Argentina is the Clos de los Siete winery, which opened in 1998. The founders of this large winery, on 1,600 acres in the Vista Flores-Valle de Uco region of Mendoza, are from Bordeaux. Investors have discovered buying land, even with hyperinflation, is profitable since land is now at the lowest prices in years. While the peso may be worth less now than a few years ago, the fertile, ripe vineyards remain rich in worth.
