It will consider markets, industries, finance and the sustainability of various minerals, food and energy. EU addresses early leavers The European Commission announces in Brussels initiatives for reducing the number of youngsters leaving education early or with low-level qualifications. Gourmet fair The European Fine Food Fair begins in Maastricht (until February 2), attended by restaurateurs, chefs and sommeliers. Regional cuisines and products will be exhibited. Sustainable seafood The Seafood Summit in Vancouver brings together seafood industry and conservation group representatives to discuss how to make the industry more environmentally and economically sustainable (until February 2). New CBI chief takes over John Cridland succeeds Sir Richard Lambert as director-general of the CBI, the UK employers’ organisation. Mr Cridland was formerly deputy director-general. TUESDAY FEBRUARY 1 Europe’s new credit rules The European Consumer Credit Directive comes into force, tightening rules on the advertising and granting of credit. Innovative nations listed The annual European Innovation Scoreboard, which compares the research and innovation performances of the European Union’s 27 member nations, is announced in Brussels. London and tax havens “The City of London and its Tax Haven Empire” is the title of a lecture given by Dr Maurice Glasman of London Metropolitan University and Nicholas Shaxson, author and journalist, at the London School of Economics. WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 2 East Africa fuels debate The East African Petroleum Conference and Exhibition begins in Kampala, Uganda (until February 4). Business leaders and politicians will discuss the development of the region’s oil and gas reserves. Straw quizzed on Iraq Jack Straw, former UK foreign secretary, appears for the second time before the inquiry into the Iraq conflict that began in 2003. His recall follows that of Tony Blair, the former prime minister. THURSDAY FEBRUARY 3 EU-China links weighed Relations between the European Union and China are discussed by Jean-Pierre Raffarin, the former prime minister of France, at the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels. Chinese New Year begins The start of the Year of the Rabbit is marked with celebrations in China and among its communities throughout the world. ‘Green’ development The Delhi Sustainable Development Summit opens in the Indian capital (until February 5), discussing how to tackle global political inertia on environmental matters and how local initiatives can play a constructive part. Holidays on show Destinations: The Holiday and Travel Show opens in London (until February 6), showcasing holiday destinations and featuring talks by travel experts and celebrities. Motorcycles on display The MCN Motorcycle Show in London features the latest machines from leading manufacturers, together with protective clothing and accessories (until February 6). Toys laid out in Germany Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair, which includes conferences as well as a host of new toy and hobby products, opens in Nuremberg (until February 8). Education dissected The World Conference on Educational Sciences discusses a wide range of educational issues over five days in Istanbul. FRIDAY FEBRUARY 4 EU leaders assemble Leaders of EU countries gather in Brussels for a European Council meeting devoted to energy and innovation. They will discuss energy security and efficiency, and how to promote and support research and innovation by companies and other organisations. Security challenges faced The Munich Security Conference assembles senior figures from around the world to discuss current and future security challenges over three days. Six Nations rugby begins The annual Six Nations rugby union tournament kicks off with Wales hosting England in Cardiff. On Saturday, Italy play Ireland in Rome and France face Scotland in Paris. SATURDAY FEBRUARY 5 Peace quartet meet The quartet of powers engaged in the Middle East peace process – the European Union, Russia, the United Nations and the US – hold talks on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. SUNDAY FEBRUARY 6 Israel hosts leaders The Herzliya Conference, Israel’s annual global policy gathering, draws international participants from government, business and academia to address security and economic issues affecting the Middle East and beyond. Texas stages Super Bowl The American football season reaches its climax in Arlington, Texas, where the Green Bay Packers play the Pittsburgh Steelers.
