Dear Board Members,


This morning, I’m proud to share with you *Stop the Slide*
<https://www.stoptheslide.org/>, an indications and warning system for
monitoring the health of American democracy.


Our goal with this project was to apply a methodology familiar to many in
military and intelligence communities to the larger question of how our
rights and freedoms are faring in the current political climate.


Every month, we will be tracking more than 180 indicators of democratic
health in America spread across seven different categories, all geared
towards helping us identify any danger of authoritarian creep.


This project was conceptualized by a small group of Truman members and
staff, but more than 30 of our expert members (with experience in the
military and intelligence communities, academia, and civil society efforts
around the world) contributed to building it out. For your awareness, this
effort has been generously supported by the Open Society Foundations.


I’ve attached an FAQ sheet for Stop the Slide which provides additional
information beyond the methodology detailed on the main page of the
website.
