Dear friends,

You’ve heard a lot about Sesame Workshop’s plans with the International Rescue Committee to bring critical early education to Syrian refugee children. As we begin to ramp up our program in the Syrian response region, we’re also exploring how our existing programming and resources can help displaced children in other parts of the world.

The current Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh is the fastest-growing refugee emergency in the world today. More than 650,000 Rohingya, a Muslim minority community that has been subjected to violence and persecution in Myanmar for decades, have crossed into Bangladesh as refugees over the last five months. UNHCR, UNICEF, Save the Children, and other international NGOs have mobilized in Cox’s Bazar in the southern coastal region of Bangladesh bordering Myanmar.

A leadership team from Sesame Workshop recently visited the Kutupalong camp in Cox’s Bazar, home to nearly 500,000 Rohingya refugees, half of whom are children under 18. The team led informal activities and screened segments of Sisimpur, our Bangladeshi version of Sesame Street, at the camp’s learning and play centers. Even though Sisimpur is in Bangla, not the Rohingya language, the response demonstrated the power of media and Muppets to bring moments of joy to the world’s most vulnerable children. Following the visit, we’re developing both immediate plans and a long-term strategy for the region. We hope that by working with UNHCR and other donor agencies and implementing organizations, we can use Sesame resources to make a meaningful impact for hundreds of thousands of Rohingya children in dire need of education and socioemotional support.
