The tragic shooting in Orlando, Florida early Sunday morning deserves our nation's highest attention. Full stop.


My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of those lost, those injured and our brothers and sisters in the LGBT community.


But that alone is not enough.


We've watched Virginia Tech, and the children lost in Newtown, Fort Hood, Charleston and San Bernardino... with every loss of life we are reminded how America's gun laws are insufficient in protecting our nation's greatest promise to its people: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.


It's outrageous that our own Senator Dean Heller voted to block a measure that would have closed the loophole that allows known and suspected terrorists, like those on the no fly list, to buy guns. If you can't get on a plane in America, you shouldn't be able to buy a gun in America.


Unlike my opponent, Cresent Hardy, I'll stand up to the NRA in Congress. There is no reason for any civilian to be able to buy an assault weapon like the one used in Orlando -- leading to the most deadly mass shooting in our lifetime.


These issues are bigger than red or blue, but make no mistake that if you are as frustrated as I am at this unnecessary loss of life: there is something you can do.


Go vote.
