06/03/2016 08:48 AM EDT By Seung Min Kim (skim@politico.com or @seungminkim) RYAN, MCCONNELL LOCK ARMS WITH TRUMP - POLITICO's John Bresnahan: "Paul Ryan was the last holdout. By bowing to Donald Trump, the new power inside the Republican Party, the House speaker and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have consummated the marriage that the GOP establishment has resisted all year long. Their political fates are now formally hitched to the bombastic businessman, and they'll have to deal with the consequences." --"On Thursday, Ryan ended weeks of drama over whether he would formally back Trump, the business mogul and reality TV star who has seized control of the GOP en route to his party's presidential nomination. Ryan's nod came just as [Hillary] Clinton declared in a speech that it would be a 'historic mistake' to elect Trump. A source close to Ryan said the speaker's decision to endorse came after several private conversations between the two but wasn't made in consultation with Trump's campaign." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb55a243ca5217c7469ae1d5eca15b467f2d405d84f137cad29 --Here's Ryan's Janesville Gazette op-ed that broke the news of his endorsement: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb5c7bbf952e1557afec8325c211bc62b35ee9ea476233787bc --Though Republican leaders are now in full-on Trump mode, that's not to say they aren't airing concerns about the presumptive nominee. McConnell, on CNN, says he's concerned Trump may be turning off Latino voters in droves, similar to the Barry Goldwater effect on black voters: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb5acd9a215425de0c4a6de03621c6eb7fbf9968a751764b452 --ICYMI, here's the latest iteration of those Trump comments that McConnell and others may be so worried about: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb53e7f10f1afad2964bc0ada72750eed92de82b5af5397cb26 RYAN WANTS TRUMP TO CHANGE TONE - The AP interview after Ryan's endorsement reveals that the speaker's backing isn't without caveats: "Ryan, the nation's highest-ranking Republican, isn't promising to help his party's presumptive presidential nominee on the campaign trail. He's not publicly backing any of Trump's policies. And even as he vows to vote for the brash billionaire, Ryan is reminding voters he doesn't support Trump's confrontational style." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb5d4cf739488a0019e266bf4551d819cf515303610b305fd00 RYAN BEGINS AGENDA ROLLOUT -- In non-Trump news from the speaker, Ryan will star in the weekly GOP address later this morning -- a departure from its usual Saturday morning release. The featured speaker will be Ryan himself to discuss the unveiling of the Republican agenda starting next Tuesday. The agenda will be called "A Better Way" and for each of the three weeks in June that the House will be in session, the GOP agenda project's six task forces will release their respective policy prescriptions. "Let's face it: people know what Republicans are against," Ryan's says in the address being released later today. "Now we're going to give you a plan that shows you what we are for." The video: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb52de65f66b11cd40780a7dd9182672e5302ca8c1acaec7d68 --His office notes that it's Ryan's second weekly address since becoming speaker. The first was on the weekend of the joint House and Senate GOP retreat in Baltimore. DEMS MULLING HOW TO EXTINGUISH THE #BERN -- Manu Raju for CNN: "Democrats in Washington have begun discussing how to encourage Sen. Bernie Sanders to end his campaign without alienating his legions of supporters, as party leaders grow eager to unite the party behind Hillary Clinton and provide a more robust defense for her candidacy ... In a phone call last month, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid made the case to Sanders why it would make sense for him to leave the race after New Jersey and California vote on June 7." --"The widespread view, according to interviews with senators, House members and senior party officials, is that Sanders needs to see the writing on the wall himself: That he has no mathematical possibility to win the race and would be better-served to see his agenda enacted if he urged his backers to support Clinton." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb597209e93b6eab96ff78f53fb8491a8015f9c3f8cb9b12996 TRANSITIONS - Carlos Sanchez, chief of staff to Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas), is taking leave of absence from the Hill to become Hillary Clinton's deputy political director. From BuzzFeed: "Sanchez ...will report to the campaign's highest ranking Latina, Amanda Renteria, who serves as national political director. In his role, Sanchez will be in charge of managing the campaign's regional political directors across the country." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb570f929a28c731b630ba973358c21cd273963ecc64b02716a HAPPY FRIDAY, June 3, 2016 and you're reading The Huddle, where we are officially bidding you farewell and welcoming new Huddle writer Heather Caygle starting Monday. She is at hcaygle@politico.com and please follow her on Twitter at @heatherscope. I'm at skim@politico.com and at @seungminkim. It was a pleasure to take over Huddle for the last two years with the excellent rotating crew of Burgess Everett, Rachael Bade and Lauren French - even when you Huddle trivia players get a bit aggressive. My new followers include @WarriorCare and @marymancini. TODAY IN CONGRESS - The House convenes for a brief pro forma session at 4:30 p.m. The Senate has its pro forma at 1 p.m. AROUND THE HILL - Nada! DEMS WILL DEMAND MORE ZIKA VOTES - Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid tells reporters in Nevada on Thursday: "We're not going to stop talking about it until we get some money. Now, not at the end of the year on some appropriations bill. We should do it right now, and that's why I had a long meeting with my staff today. We're going to push forward next week and force the Republicans to vote again against full funding for Zika virus. We need that." PRINCE'S DEATH COULD BOOST OPIOID BILL - Carl Hulse analyzes the impact of the legendary musician's death on congressional efforts to tackle opioid abuse: The official confirmation of Prince's death by opioid overdose is likely to reverberate in Washington, where lawmakers are still trying to hammer out a deal on legislation attempting to stem a national crisis in abuse of those drugs. 'No one is immune," Senator Rob Portman, the Ohio Republican and one of the main authors of the Senate legislation, said in a statement." --"House and Senate negotiators ... now hope to produce a final package before the next recess, over the Fourth of July. Prince's death is likely to spur them on. High-profile drug fatalities have had that effect in the past. The death from a cocaine overdose of the college basketball star Len Bias in June 1986 is widely credited with starting the crackdown of those years that came to be known as the war on drugs." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb502b759d3ad8d16d50d5b912112885404030bdeff815b0d43 MCGINTY FORCED TO EXPLAIN COLLEGE CLAIMS - From the AP's Marc Levy in Harrisburg: "The Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania was forced Thursday to explain her campaign trail statements that she was the first in her big family to go to college - even though an older brother graduated from college years before her ... The claim is a key campaign talking point of McGinty's as the Philadelphia native has played up her blue-collar roots in her challenge to Republican incumbent Sen. Pat Toomey in a race that could tilt control of the U.S. Senate." --"The McGinty campaign said the difference is that John McGinty earned credits from a community college before getting a bachelor's degree from La Salle. In a statement released by his sister's campaign, John McGinty said 'the way that Katie and our family have always talked about our experience is she was the first of the 10 McGinty kids to attend and graduate from a four-year college, straight out of high school.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb527ea57e48e03e0479e1cdc4177b5d9c052eb5aa7f381087a --Here's the story that broke the news of McGinty's misleading comments, from BuzzFeed: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb5f94c81ec75d87d8723eba818598baebed9bc322cae52c85c BABY MAKES EIGHT FOR DUFFY - A big Huddle congrats to the Duffy family. From Roll Call: "Wisconsin Rep. Sean P. Duffy had a recess gift, a baby boy named Patrick Miguel Duffy. Patrick's birth makes baby number eight for the third-term Republican and his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy. He was born Sunday at 1:03 p.m. back home in Wisconsin ... Big families run in the Duffy family. The congressman is himself number 10 out of 11 children." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=724bd447d8cc7fb5d46b36430ad148da976d1ce2feda3e521bf46dd83574d487 THURSDAY'S TRIVIA WINNER - Kenny Harrill was the first person to correct answer that Kentucky was the fifth state in history to produce two Senate majority leaders. The others were Maine, Indiana, Kansas and Tennessee. That answer is final, Huddle trivia players. TODAY'S TRIVIA - I'll take this one again: Name the three states that have had three female senators. The first person to correctly answer will get a mention in the next day's Huddle.
