I am so proud of all our athletes and their many accomplishments! This long weekend arrived at just the right moment to give our students the chance to recharge before semester exams. Tuesday, May 31, will follow a regular school day schedule, and class time will be devoted to reviewing for exams. Wednesday is a reading day, so students are not required to be on campus. The library will be open, however, so students are welcome to come to school to study. Some teachers hold optional review sessions on the reading day. Students should check with their teachers to confirm the time and location for the review sessions. Students wishing to schedule time to meet with teachers should e-mail them in advance to arrange a specific meeting time. As previously mentioned, June exams will start at 10:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 noon. Students who qualify for extended time will begin their exams at 9:30 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be available for students after exams. The library will remain open throughout the day, so students may remain on campus to study after their exams. Our MBS Book buyback drive takes place June 7 and 8 from 10:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Crane Room. Students should direct questions to Ms. Melanie Fields at fieldsm@sidwell.edu. Our last day of school is June 9. The day will open at 8:00 in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room, and we will gather for one last time with the Class of 2016. Seniors will present their senior projects in two separate sessions throughout the day, and we will end the school day with our closing assembly and an ice cream party in the courtyard. Students can expect to be dismissed by 2:30 p.m. I hope you all enjoy this wonderful three-day weekend! Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Upcoming Events: May 30, Memorial Day, no school May 31, Review Day, regular class schedule June 1, Reading Day, no classes meet June 2, Math Exam June 3, History Exam June 6, Science Exam June 7, Language Exam June 8, English Exam June 9, Last Day of School June 7-8, 10:45-3:00 p.m., MBS Book buyback June 10, Commencement, 10:30 a.m. June 20, Report Cards posted online June 20-July 31, Summer Studies Session Announcements HORIZON SUBSCRIPTIONS Dear Parents/Guardians, Did you know that you can subscribe to the Horizon student newspaper? For only $25/year, you can stay updated with all of the issues and developments concerning the Upper School campus. Also a great gift for grandparents! Examples of what you can find in the latest edition: [] An article about Emily Thigpen, the newest member of the College Counseling Department [] An address by Bryan Garman on the sexual assault allegations at Sidwell Friends [] Success stories of the Sidwell Friends Chess Club and the Science Bowl [] An in-depth article on awareness/prevention of sexual assault in our community [] Discussions about the use of the “N-word” in the classroom [] The latest on sports at SFS, including the dominance of the girls’ softball and boys' tennis teams The newspaper is published about eight times during the school year. The Horizon can be sent to your address! Students spend a great deal of effort writing these articles, so supporting them is much appreciated. We soon hope to add even more features such as purchasable photos online. To subscribe, please send an e-mail to VDoddy17@sidwell.edu. Thanks, The Horizon Management (Victor Doddy, Garrett Nixon, Sofia Miranda) GOODBYE COFFEES WITH SALLY Join Sally on Friday, June 3, and Monday, June 6, from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. on the Zartman House Terrace for coffee and pastries. Come show Sally your appreciation and wish her well for the many years to come. ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAMS AND IMMUNIZATIONS DC_School_Immunization_Flyer_201617.pdfAll health-related forms must be submitted online via Magnus Health. No paper health forms will be accepted at the School. Annual Physical Exams: All students are required to have an annual physical exam during the 12-month period immediately preceding the first day of the school year. You will receive an automated e-mail reminder directly from Magnus Health six weeks prior to the expiration of the physical examination. A DC Universal Health Certificate must be completed and signed by a physician or advanced practice nurse and submitted to the School via Magnus Health. (Sign into the Parent Portal and click on the link Update Student Health Information.) Parents will be given both oral and written notice if they fail to provide the required form. If, after 30 days, it has not been submitted, public health authorities will be notified. In addition to submission of the DC Universal Health Certificate as described above (12 months prior to first day of school), in order to participate in all School and physical activities, students must update the Vital Health Record (by July 1 within the calendar year), and the Consent to Treat Form (by July 1 within the current calendar year). If you find that you will not be able to furnish the School with an updated Health Certificate by the expiration date of the last physical examination, you may have the health care practitioner write a note indicating that your child “is cleared to participate in physical and other School-related activities until next physical exam scheduled on . . . .” This note will suffice until that scheduled physical exam is completed and should be submitted via Magnus Health. Immunizations: In accordance with DC law, all students must submit documentation that they have been vaccinated against specific illnesses before the school year begins. Tdap, meningitis, and HPV immunizations are required by the DC Department of Health for students 11 years and older entering 6th through 12th grades. No student will be allowed to attend school without a Certificate of Immunization unless the student has been exempted in accordance with law. In order for a student to be exempted from providing certification of immunization, parents must submit a completed religious or medical exemption form on an annual basis to Magnus Health, via the Parent Portal on the SFS website. REIMBURSEMENT REQUESTS Reimbursement_Request_Form.pdfBelieve it or not, the end of the year is upon us. This means that the Parents Association is closing out its 2015/16 books and setting its 2016/17 budget. But we can't do either without receiving as many reimbursement requests as possible by June 15. So please submit them asap, either by dropping them in the PA mailbox at Zartman House or by mailing them to the PA treasurer, Mike Raibman. Please remember that you need to submit original receipts with your reimbursement request. E-mail Mike with any questions (mikeraibman@gmail.com). Thanks for your help! Events ALUMNI-SENIOR DAY: JUNE 3 Seniors are invited to join the Alumni Association for Alumni-Senior Day on Friday, June 3, in the Kogod Arts Center from 2:00 -5:30 p.m. Seniors will hear from a panel of college alumni about their transition from SFS to college, learn strategies for managing their own finances, get access to the Alumni App, make a time capsule, and enjoy an early dinner catered by Cava. Contact Anna Lindel, Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement, with any questions at lindela@sidwell.edu. SENIOR PROJECTS ARTS PERFORMANCES The PA Arts Committee celebrates two senior project performances this year. All are invited! Friday, June 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room: Jordan Merlin-Jones---vocal recital. Tuesday, June 7, and Wednesday, June 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the Scott Rosenberg Theater: Maddie Douglas performing Chicks by Grace McKeaney. (Audience level is 9th grade and up.) For more information about these performances, check the Arts page of the website. ALL-COMMUNITY MEETING FOR WORSHIP: JUNE 5 Join members of our community at Meeting for Worship on Sunday June 5, at 10:30 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Refreshments will be served at the rise of meeting. Young school-age children will be invited to leave meeting after about 15 minutes to join the children’s program. Please let Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu) know if your child will participate in the children’s program. END-OF-YEAR CELEBRATION WITH PBS, PLAS, PAS Parents and students from all three divisions are cordially invited to join the Parents of Black Students (PBS), Parents of Latino Students (PLAS), and Parents of Asian Students (PAS) for an end-of-year reception. We will be gathering in the Upper School Dining Room on Tuesday, May 31, from 6:00--8:00 p.m. Please join us as we recognize the graduating seniors, hear from the seniors and their parents on how one successfully navigates the journey through Sidwell Friends School, and listen to others discuss the School’s Equity, Justice, and Community program. Come and enjoy the opportunity to meet and greet other parents in the community before summer is upon us. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Fuentes at lisafuentes@gmail.com or Nicole Lang at washpeds@verizon.net. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS Who has been the compiler of Quaker Quotes all these years? Is it a staff member, or a parent? It’s been a parent—but she’s leaving (her daughter is graduating)! And we want to thank her. Cynthia Terrell has been, in her words, “helping edit” the Quaker Quotes in the newsletter since her daughter, Becca Richie, was in 6th grade. But others recall her handling Quaker Quotes pretty much solo after working with Holly Moore the first year or so, and Cynthia graciously continued even after she rotated off Quaker Life Committee. At Sidwell Friends, we know Cynthia to be a parent with an upbeat, positive outlook on life who is so generous to all three School divisions with her time and knowledge of Quakerism. At Friends Meeting of Washington, people know her as the woman who will accept infinite donations of hand-knitted goods and distribute them to worthy causes—one of which is Bethesda Meeting’s auction to benefit the Ramallah Friends School. Cynthia, herself a passionate knitter, lent an enthusiastic hand to this winter’s QLC-sponsored knitting Artstop at Artrageous. She is also passionate about quotations, including the very applicable George Fox saying, Let your lives preach, which she notes is often misquoted as Let your life speak. Either way, in her spare time from quoting and knitting, Cynthia has raised three children, served national Friends organizations in DC, and (with her husband, Rob Richie) runs FairVote, an organization seeking to “respect every vote through registering all eligible, establishing ranked choice voting to encourage candidates to reach beyond their base, increasing representation of women, and instituting American forms of proportional representation.” Cynthia grew up in Germantown Friends Meeting outside Philadelphia, and comes from a family with quite a long tradition of speaking truth to power. Her ancestor Susannah Martin was, says Cynthia, “an outspoken property-owning Quaker who was hanged for witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692.” Cynthia and her family attend Bethesda Meeting. In the words of a Sidwell Friends parent, Like a long breath in, a long exhale out … Cynthia was a source, week after week. And like a steady plough turning over parched soil Cynthia's work satisfied some thirst. Thank you, Cynthia. Quaker Quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu!
