The *CSIS Africa Program* and the *National Democratic Institute (NDI)* invite you to a discussion on: *The Zanzibar Elections: Democracy Deferred* With:Seif Sharif HamadSecretary-General and former Presidential Candidate, Civic United Front (CUF) Moderated by:Jennifer CookeDirector, CSIS Africa Program Mercedeh MomeniDeputy Regional Director, Southern and East Africa, NDI Monday, June 13, 201610 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. 2ND FLOOR CONFERENCE ROOM CENTER FOR STRATEGIC AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES 1616 RHODE ISLAND AVE NW, WASHINGTON, D.C. 20036 Please RSVP to africa@csis.org Tanzania’s political trajectory has taken a troubling turn in the last year, prompting the U.S. government to cancel a $472 million Millennium Challenge Corporation compact and more broadly to reassess the country’s reputation as a stand-out democracy in sub-Saharan Africa. Among the most important U.S. concerns was the abrupt annulment of the October 2015 election on the quasi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar, in which opposition leader Seif Sharif Hamad of the Civic United Front (CUF) appeared to have defeated incumbent Ali Mohamed Shein of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). CUF boycotted a re-run election in March 2016, ending a government of national unity on Zanzibar that was negotiated in 2010. Please join for this session, in which Mr. Hamad will share his perspectives on the 2015 election process and how Zanzibar and Tanzania might resolve the political and constitutional crisis that resulted. *This event is made possible by general support to the CSIS Africa Program.* <http://csis.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=8bf538f843&e=55ed03fc6a> <http://csis.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=36b7a3ed33&e=55ed03fc6a> <http://us11.forward-to-friend.com/forward?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=f6fcd50be2&e=55ed03fc6a> *Copyright © 2016 Center for Strategic & International Studies, All rights reserved.* 202-887-0200 | www.CSIS.org <http://csis.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=f473efd85f&e=55ed03fc6a> Center for Strategic & International Studies 1616 Rhode Island Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20036 Add us to your address book <http://csis.us11.list-manage.com/vcard?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=f326fc46b6> Update subscription preferences <http://csis.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=68c49784e6&e=55ed03fc6a> Unsubscribe from this list <http://csis.us11.list-manage1.com/unsubscribe?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=f326fc46b6&e=55ed03fc6a&c=f6fcd50be2> -- Mohamed (Mo) Ahmed Program Assistant | Southern and East Africa National Democratic Institute for International Affairs | NDI 455 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, 8th Floor | Washington, DC 20001 202.728.6302 (Office) 703.894.7255 (Cell) www.ndi.or
