To subscribe, please send me an email at aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org) Note: The Evening CSIS will be gone fishing tomorrow, resuming publication on Thursday. ** Turkey's Terror ------------------------------------------------------------ Four people have been detained in connection with a car bomb attack targeting a police bus that killed 11 people Tuesday in Istanbul, Turkey's state-run Anadolu agency reported, citing police officials. And, as Time’s Jared Malsin reports (http://time.com/4360053/istanbul-terror-bombing-beyazit-district/) from Istanbul, the deadly bombing is one more sign that terror has come to Turkey. ICYMI, the New York Times Magazine published Robert F. Worth’s “Behind the Barricades of Turkey’s Hidden War (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/29/magazine/behind-the-barricades-of-turkeys-hidden-war.html?version=meter+at+0&contentId=&mediaId=&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.google.com%2F&priority=true&action=click&contentCollection=Europe&module=RelatedCoverage®ion=EndOfArticle&pgtype=article) .” Dive Deeper: The Ankara Policy Center’s Unal Cevikoz released a report in late April edited by CSIS’s Jeffrey Mankoff: “Turkey in a Reconnecting Eurasia: Foreign Economic and Security Interests (https://csis-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/publication/160429_Cevikov_TurkeyReconnectingEurasia_Web.pdf) .” ** Strong Bonds ------------------------------------------------------------ India will try to join a climate change deal within this year, the Obama administration said today, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Obama at the White House and the two leaders played up their efforts to cooperate on issues of global concern, as AP’s Matthew Pennington reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/is-the-obama-modi-friendship-real-in-india-many-doubt-it/2016/06/07/db8056ce-2c8d-11e6-b9d5-3c3063f8332c_story.html) . Tomorrow, Modi addresses a joint meeting of Congress where climate change, security cooperation, and trade will all be featured topics of his remarks, as the Indian Express’ Shubhajit Roy reports (http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/modi-us-congress-address-climate-change-defence-trade-2839930/) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Rick Rossow authored a new Critical Questions (https://www.csis.org/analysis/prime-minister-modi%E2%80%99s-visit-washington) (CSIS’s signature series of asked & answer short papers). ** Retaking Syria ------------------------------------------------------------ Syrian President Bashar al-Assad signaled today that his government intends to escalate military efforts to crush the five-year-old uprising against his rule, saying the bloodshed will not end until he has regained control over all areas of Syria lost to the rebellion, as the Washington Post’s Liz Sly reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/assad-pledges-more-bloodshed-in-syria-says-the-peace-process-has-failed/2016/06/07/efcd0e96-2cb6-11e6-b9d5-3c3063f8332c_story.html) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Anthony Cordesman recently published a commentary “US Strategy and the War in Iraq and Syria (https://www.csis.org/analysis/us-strategy-and-war-iraq-and-syria) .” ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 23% ------------------------------------------------------------ The percentage increase in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks in Q1 2016 compared with Q4 2015. Source: Akamai Q1 2016 State of the Intern/Security Report. (https://www.akamai.com/us/en/our-thinking/state-of-the-internet-report/global-state-of-the-internet-security-ddos-attack-reports.jsp?mkt_tok=eyJpIjoiWW1NMk56SmxOemt3T1dObSIsInQiOiJ3a3V5TmF1ZFQ4NG83dGhBV24zMnZLYnl5ZzZsd0Y0UWhFQWswMFcrcDlrUWVQeHc1ZnNhY0lidG5EY2JUTzFrVjdLMlB4V3ZkZWtzZ2JcL0FyNmVjaE1xdDVPdFwvMW5DSTdqeUtydGp0WGRFPSJ9) ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “The deadly bombing in Istanbul today was the fourth such attack in Turkey’s biggest city this year. It has underlined the extreme vulnerability of the country to the growing scourge of terrorism at the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan and the summer tourist season. Unfortunately, it is unlikely to be the last such outrage.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Bulent Aliriza on today’s bombing in Turkey. ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ Carl Hvenmark Nilsson is a visiting fellow in CSIS’s Europe Program. Today Carl authored “The Baltic Region’s Security Gap: Understanding Why US-Swedish Military Cooperation Is Key (https://www.csis.org/analysis/baltic-region%E2%80%99s-security-gap-understanding-why-us-swedish-military-cooperation-key) .” For security issues in the Baltic, Carl is one to watch. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo credit: MANDEL NGAN/AFP/Getty Images.) President Obama shakes hands with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India during a meeting in the Oval Office at the White House today. ** Highly Recommended ------------------------------------------------------------ “The Media Called the Democratic Race a Day Early (http://www.newyorker.com/news/john-cassidy/the-media-called-the-democratic-race-a-day-early?mbid=nl_160607_Daily&CNDID=33849010&spMailingID=9025206&spUserID=MTIwNzM5NTAzNTQzS0&spJobID=940674814&spReportId=OTQwNjc0ODE0S0) ,” by the New Yorker’s John Cassidy. ** CSIS Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join CSIS’s Southeast Asia Program at 2:00 p.m. for “President Barack Obama’s Visit to Vietnam: A New Era in U.S.-Vietnam Relations (https://www.csis.org/events/president-barack-obama%E2%80%99s-visit-vietnam-new-era-us-vietnam-relations) ,” with Amb. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2016/06/07/quiz-what-do-you-actually-know-about-the-e-u/?postshare=1651465323513061&tid=ss_tw) ” ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ I don’t need any particular excuse to write about Van Morrison—do I? Well, I could write about the reissue of his seminal live album, “It’s Too Late to Stop Now” which was culled from the singer’s 1973 tour. It’s on the way—in just a couple days on June 10, it will be the focus of a 3 CD/1 DVD archival release plus a remastered reissue of the original record. Reissues are big business amid the ashes of the rock and roll music business. It’s an interesting phenomenon. And yes, I’m eagerly awaiting this trove of Van Morrison material. So, if you didn’t know, you know now, that the world will soon have more from Van the Man. To tie those of us who need to be tied over for a couple more days until the reissue let’s take a look at Van live in Belfast in ’79. His “Moonshine Whiskey (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyqIED-yBbE) ” is a song in which Morrison talks Texas, trains, the landscape and harkens to country-blues artists’ like Hank Williams who informed so much of his music. Van the Man loves America—maybe that’s just another reason why so many of us love him. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
