[http://www.usglc.org/downloads/2015/09/usglc-logo.jpg] June 12, 2016 Dear Board of Directors, While we are all watching with such deep sadness the horrific tragedy unfolding in Orlando, our team is gearing up for what will be two very impactful days in Washington. I am looking forward to seeing most of you at the USGLC's 12th annual State Leaders Summit and I wanted to share the final program and a few other items. 1. State Leaders Summit Highlights - Thank you to everyone who will be speaking over the next two days in what I believe will be our best program ever. I have attached the final program that includes: * Over 500 state leaders from 33 states will be participating; * Many of our local State leaders will be conducting hometown print and broadcast interviews; * Expect hundreds of meetings on Capitol Hill covering half of the Senate and more than one-third of the House; * Sponsorships for the Summit include Deloitte & ASU (thank you!) * Program highlights: * Keynotes by General David Petraeus and Meet the Press Host Chuck Todd * "A League of Their Own" featuring 5 women leading International Affairs Agencies: USAID's Gayle Smith, MCC's Dana Hyde, OPIC's Elizabeth Littlefield, Peace Corps' Carrie Hessler-Radelet, and USTDA's Lee Zak * Success Stories by Michael Gerson and Steve Radelet * Capitol Hill Champions: Senators Ben Cardin, Lindsey Graham, and more * Former Members: Jon Kyl, Mike Rogers and Evan Bayh * And much more 2. State, Foreign Operations and Zika Update - Our Summit's timing is critical for our work. Both the House and Senate State, Foreign Operations Subcommittee will be marking up their bills next week and Appropriators continue to make progress (although slow) on the emergency supplemental for Zika. We will be watching how Appropriators balance the need to confront numerous challenge (including Zika and the refugee crisis) with our long-term development needs and advocating for no further cuts. 3. Speaker Ryan's National Security Strategy - Earlier this week, Speaker Ryan and House Republicans released their national security strategy, which embraced development and diplomacy as a critical component of the strategy stating, "The U.S. military has worked tirelessly since 9/11 to defeat our enemies. But to win the peace, we must strengthen the civilian elements of our national security." We will be sending a full analysis early this week but in essence - while definitely not perfect, Ryan moved a step closer to embracing our policy agenda. Please remember to join us anytime on Monday in the Green Room at the Grand Hyatt to meet and greet our speakers, and again on Capitol Hill on Tuesday - either at our breakfast at 8:00am in the Kennedy Caucus Room with Senator Ben Cardin, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee or our closing reception at 3:30pm in the Atrium of the Reserve Officers Association with Senator Lindsey Graham, among others. Many thanks, Liz Liz Schrayer, USGL
