Good Sunday morning. It's 50 DAYS to the opening of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
SUNDAY BEST - "Trump camp: We're 'working together,'" by Jon Prior: "Trump's campaign manager Corey Lewandowski ... defended Trump's 'small, efficient team' on 'Fox News Sunday' and said he and Paul Manafort ... 'have a fantastic relationship. We work together closely every day ... It's every important to know, very, very important to know that there is no sunlight between Paul and I.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=617028ccb44e13353c37f93cb2b74909da44036620795c16d8da472af0b5f7de
--PAUL MANAFORT to JON KARL on ABC's "This Week," re fears of some Trump staffers, reported in yesterday's N.Y. Times, that the campaign headquarters is bugged: "[T]here's a lot of good work going on there and we've been able to develop a campaign that is cohesive, that's working together ... Do I believe it? No, I don't believe it. But I don't know who said that."
--ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER to CHUCK TODD on NBC's "Meet the Press," re endorsing Trump: "I will make an announcement before the election, you can be sure of that. But I will do it my way. Which is always an unusual way."
ADVICE FOR HILLARY's AD TEAM from LBJ's ad men: For Politico Magazine, Robert Mann and Zack Stanton "talked to two of the geniuses behind the greatest ad campaign in political history": Sid Myers, former art director at Doyle Dane Bernbach, LBJ's ad firm: "Instead of having Hillary just stand in front of the camera as a talking head, they should do what we did - really, just illustrate what Goldwater said. When he said the United States would be better off if we sawed off the Eastern Seaboard and let it float out to sea, we just illustrated that and showed how ridiculous that was. We had a hand come out of the water and saw off the Eastern Seaboard, which just crunches off and flows out.
The image was so ridiculous that it just showed how ridiculous his thinking was."
--Lloyd Wright, the DNC's 1964 media coordinator: "Who would even think about visualizing Goldwater's comment about sawing off the Eastern Seaboard? I think that same technique would work today." Sid: "If you visually showed 11 million Mexicans being deported from this country in trucks, I think that would be unbelievable." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=617028ccb44e1335a81ff7e3476139f0da9c7ef7de819de6e1b3c041971022ed ... BREAKING - "Shipwrecks 'kill up to 700 migrants'" - BBC: "Up to 700 migrants are feared drowned in a series of shipwrecks off the coast of Libya in the last few days, the UN refugee agency says. The boats sank south of Italy on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as the migrants tried to reach Europe in unseaworthy vessels. Spring weather has led to a surge of people attempting the perilous crossing from Africa to Europe." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=617028ccb44e1335fa63ca5b6c15482c78858482fa272509aee1beb8da83947b
A STORY THAT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE: We linked to this article in Playbook yesterday. But I read the whole thing when it came out in print this morning, and I'm recommending it for a new reason. "THE MAN WHO SEDUCED THE 7TH FLEET" - by Craig Whitlock, on the WashPost front page with three strip pages inside - is about "Fat Leonard" Glenn Francis, a 350-pound, Singapore-based naval contractor who has pleaded guilty to bribery and fraud. The scandal has gotten lots of incremental coverage, and the San Diego Union-Tribune did a deep dive last November, "How 'Fat Leonard' fleeced the fleet."
But you should read today's article because it's a cautionary tale for people who work in government, business, politics or journalism, and are occasionally (or often) offered goodies by people trying to curry favor. Reading this story is a reminder of how corruption happens - people preying on our insecurities, trying to make us feel important.
Whitlock, a Pentagon reporter for The Post, quotes a confessional letter to a federal judge by a former Navy lieutenant commander who was sentenced to 40 months in prison for giving "Fat Leonard" classified ship schedules, as well as business secrets of his competitors: "I suspect that he sensed the weakness of my character. He was like a snake charmer, preying on my flaws and manipulating me to serve or advance his interests."
I often tell young people about the Mikey basic rule of ethics - and this works in journalism, law, the workplace, marriage, whatever: "If you wonder if it's OK - or if you have to ask if it's OK - it's probably not." Our gut is usually right, then we try to overlook or overrule our instincts because of circumstance, context or other rationalizations. Don't: There be dragons!
A second pointer I often give to young reporters: "The reality is important. But the PERCEPTION is equally important. Ask yourself: 'Could this be twisted to LOOK bad?'" This article is a reminder that corruption can start small (an inappropriately lavish party), and wind up epic -- a limo picking up a Navy ship's commander at the pier and taking him onshore for free shopping, concerts, cigars and hookers. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=617028ccb44e1335dabb975da5ac5c46c25babdf1deea94ca0444f8b68efb524
COMING ATTRACTIONS - L.A. Times 2-col. lead, "Democrats headed for a Mideast clash: Moves toward a new platform stance on Israel could further splinter the party," by Noah Bierman (online: "Sanders moves toward a fight over Israel, forcing Hillary Clinton to navigate a splintered party"): "Four years ago, the floor of the Democratic National Convention erupted into boos after delegates, acting at the behest of President Obama, restored language to the party platform sought by backers of Israel. ... Since then, ... unease among liberal Democrats [has grown] about Israel's policies toward the Palestinians." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=617028ccb44e1335ba31fc96de09911998b0f26bde6dc3eb0385c0114af698d9

TO TELL YOUR KIDS - "Hardly a dog's life for Obama's pets Bo and Sunny," by AP's Darlene Superville: "The pair of Portuguese water dogs - Bo with his distinctive white chest and front paws, and the all-black Sunny - are canine ambassadors for the White House, very popular and ... in demand ... Michelle Obama said[:] 'I get a memo at the beginning of the month with a request for their schedules, and I have to approve their appearances.' ... The dogs ... have cheered wounded service members, as well as the hospitalized children the first lady visits each year just before Christmas." INSIDE THE CAMPAIGNS:
--N.Y. Times A1, top of col. 1, "Unusual Race Tests Playbook For Clinton Bid: The Traditional Won't Do, Some Allies Say," by Amy Chozick, Alex Burns and Jonathan Martin: "[E]arly optimism that this would be an easy race is evaporating. In the corridors of Congress, on airplane shuttles between New York and Washington, at donor gatherings and on conference calls, anxiety is spreading through the Democratic Party that Mrs. Clinton is struggling to find her footing. While she enjoys many demographic advantages heading into the fall, key Democrats say they are growing worried that her campaign has not determined how to combat her unpredictable, often wily Republican rival ...
"Prominent Democrats say a more provocative approach is needed. ... The sense of nervousness crystallized this week when Mrs. Clinton devoted campaign events across California to hitting Mr. Trump for not releasing his tax returns and depicting him as a cold corporate titan who profited off the housing crisis. Such charges helped undermine Mr. Romney ... Yet Mrs. Clinton's remarks received little in-depth coverage in the news media, while cable channels went live with Mr. Trump's rat-a-tat recitation of 'Crooked Hillary' ...
"Senator Chuck Schumer of New York is concerned that she lacks a comprehensive strategy to confront Mr. Trump, and has told Democrats that the Clinton campaign must bring on a senior staff member dedicated only to the Trump portfolio. ... 'Sometimes, you get the feeling that they're in a professional boxing match and he's in a street fight, and they're coming in with their gloves on,' said the Rev. Al Sharpton.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0751bc0c0d3524d8d9572534110822f7ce6ce2d4b03542ea3f4629f8f93353b
--WashPost A1, bottom right corner, "Inside Trump campaign, an unending series of tests: Always-in-charge candidate offers glimpse of his management style," by Sean Sullivan and Bob Costa: Trump is "an executive who is fond of promoting rivalries among subordinates, wary of delegating major decisions, scornful of convention and fiercely insistent on a culture of loyalty around him. ... In fashioning his campaign after his real estate and entertainment projects, the mogul has inspired supporters and alarmed critics with his brazen moves.
"Trump at times seem to play [Corey Lewandowski and Paul Manafort] off of each other. Manafort appears to relish being a strategist and chairman more than the manager Lewandowski. Lewandowski, who prides himself on having been at Trump's side since the campaign's start, regularly takes the lead on overseeing events, operations and Trump's travels." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0751bc0c0d3524d38f9c9f9c770125da8d62ec0b1904882124b1a5d828f4e61
PULLING BACK THE CAMERA -- PETER BAKER on N.Y. Times A1, at fold, "Rise of Trump Tracks Debate Over Fascism": "[Q]uestions are surfacing around the globe about a revival of fascism, generally defined as a governmental system that asserts complete power and emphasizes aggressive nationalism and often racism. ... 'This could be one of those moments that's quite dangerous and we'll look back and wonder why we treated it as ho-hum at a time when we could have stopped it,' said [Brookings scholar] Robert Kagan." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0751bc0c0d3524d5bbda053a5f7739f83da5d04996085a8c0aa15129466a325

--Per Jason Waskey, the show last night was "filled with some skits about Trump and Hillary, including one where in a dream lots of former presidents appear to warn against Trump. The sound effects team did spot-on impersonations of Reagan Nixon JFK, etc. And lots of patriotic tunes to honor the troops!"
ANTHONY BOURDAIN, "Six True Things about Dinner with Obama," after their meal in Hanoi, Vietnam: "The President is very comfortable with chopsticks. He handled the sticky, hard to separate noodles that accompany the pork and the broth components of Bun Cha skillfully. He even went in for seconds. ... The reaction among regular people in Hanoi to the fact that the US President chose to eat Bun Cha was beyond all imagining. The effect was unbelievable.
"People were actually crying the next day, describing to me their shock and their pride, the reactions of their neighbors, to this completely unexpected choice of meal-and the venue. ... He was among the very few guests on my show who ever asked the camera crew if they got to eat too. And he made a point of taking a picture with all of them when we were done. ... I believe he enjoyed that beer." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0751bc0c0d3524da957a6668d9c76f5702483c025f2b03696a6a5ef0696e483
REMEMBERING CASSANDRA BUTTS - WashPost p. C9, "Obama law school classmate and adviser," by Matt Schudel: "Cassandra Q. Butts, who was President Obama's classmate at Harvard Law School and a longtime member of the president's inner circle who advised him throughout his political career and served as a deputy White House counsel, died [Wed.] at her home in Washington. She was 50. She sought medical attention early last week, when she began feeling ill. She died before learning that she had been diagnosed with acute leukemia ...
"Butts met the future president in 1988, when they were filling out financial-aid forms during their first days at Harvard Law School. They had a shared interest in jazz and remained close friends throughout law school and in later years. Along with Valerie Jarrett, Susan E. Rice and others, Ms. Butts was sometimes described as one of the 'Sisterhood' of female advisers especially close to the president and first lady Michelle Obama. ... For the past two years, while awaiting confirmation as ambassador to the Bahamas, she served as an adviser to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0751bc0c0d3524d4cd89322cd969fd5dbe40bb437e2165f4901cac89d0216c7
--Statement from the President and First Lady on the Passing of Cassandra Quin Butts: "To know Cassandra Butts was to know someone who made you want to be better. And Michelle and I were fortunate enough to count her as a friend for most of our adult lives. Cassandra and I met as law students, and we quickly discovered a shared passion for jazz - and for public service. ... She made America better. She made so many lives better, including ours. We admired her so much. And we will miss her deeply." Full text http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0751bc0c0d3524dc78efdc53143f11ecce56dbdb1e2a72cce73ff7231b5d393
DEEP DIVE -- N.Y. Times Sunday Styles cover, "The Aftermath of a Scandal: Nearly four years later, David Petraeus has moved on. But what of Paula Broadwell?" by Jessica Bennett: "Petraeus is now a partner in a New York private equity firm, and has advised the White House on the war against the Islamic State. He publishes op-ed articles, speaks publicly and has affiliations with three universities, including Harvard. ... Broadwell has struggled to find her footing. ... The F.B.I. still has her computers - including her dissertation research - and she withdrew from her Ph.D. program. She said she was told in more than one job interview that, while she was qualified, hiring her would be a
public-relations nightmare." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0751bc0c0d3524d6336811a9050b449649f6f581f6991a1363911993058f2ab
