So what do two former four-star Commandants and a top CEO have in common? They just took to the pages of TIME and FOXNews.com challenging all three remaining presidential candidates on why U.S. engagement overseas matters. I am pleased to share what they had to say - along with other interesting tidbits - in the USGLC's new GLOBAL GAB, a quick snapshot to help you stay up to speed on what's happening when politics and foreign policy meet. Welcome your feedback and any items to include next time. Best, Liz Liz Schrayer, USGLC THE GLOBAL GAB: Top Brass Challenge Candidates, Mosquito Mayhem, Dueling Foreign Policy Speeches June 6, 2016 SMART READS. Former Commandants of the Marines and Coast Guard - General James Conway and Admiral James Loy - just made the case in TIME Magazine for why threats "have become more resistant to bullets" and how development and diplomacy are vital for keeping us safe. Check out their 3 Lessons for the Next Commander-in-Chief. Also, business leader http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=xcB-SudNrni9JPnblkicFg Andrew Tisch, Co-Chairman of the Loews Corporation, highlights the powerful economic benefits of foreign assistance in a FOX News op-ed: "America can't afford to retreat. We need more influence overseas-not less." http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=6e6axWgE8FuYouLJ2ztPEQ THE SAN DIEGO SPEECH. While much has been written about Hillary Clinton's foreign policy address - the first since Donald Trump emerged as the presumptive GOP nominee - an interesting comment came from George W. Bush's former communications chief who remarked that "this was a speech that Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio or Lindsey Graham could have given." In outlining her 7 foreign policy pillars, Clinton stated that "we need to embrace all the tools of American power, especially diplomacy and development." In a factsheet, the campaign highlighted her work on modernizing "development and assistance programs" and making women's empowerment "central to American foreign policy." ICYMI - TRUMP ON FOREIGN ASSISTANCE. Following Trump's recent foreign policy speech, he weighed in on our nation's humanitarian and foreign assistance programs for the first time in an interview with Greta Van Susteren. He noted "if we don't help" countries facing disasters, then it would create "bigger problems." On aid to countries like Pakistan, he said "we don't want to see total instability," adding that the alternative could be more expensive and end up on the "other side of the ledger... could really be a disaster." In the case of assistance to countries struggling with poverty, Trump said he would "try to keep some of these countries going" while underscoring the domestic and fiscal challenges facing the U.S. ONE WORD. An interesting word used to describe Trump's foreign policy: Not "isolationist" but "minimalist" - Council of Foreign Relations President Richard Haass on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS yesterday. MOSQUITO MAYHEM. As lawmakers come back from recess, the showdown in Washington over Zika funding continues to buzz. Both the House and Senate recently passed differing proposals and are still nearly $500 million apart. With less than 26 legislative days left before Congress goes on recess for the national party conventions in July and 60 days before the Summer Olympics in Brazil, health experts are increasingly concerned. As former Ebola Czar Ron Klain wrote in the Washington Post recently, "Zika is not 'coming' to the United States: It is already here." http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=cdLFPW01guQpYtGMtGU2Zg DATAPOINT. Six years ago, 1,100 people were displaced per day worldwide. Latest figures report it's 42,500 per day - the largest refugee crisis since World War II. THE BEEHIVE STATE. The USGLC launched its 25th State Advisory Committee in Utah last month with a timely op-ed in the Salt Lake City Tribune by our new bipartisan co-chairs, former Governor Jon Huntsman and Rep. Jim Matheson - plus a powerhouse event with Rep. Chris Stewart. http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=7bDUXQXKxc2_83bemOsUgA WHAT TO WATCH. Trump could offer a formal rebuttal to Clinton's foreign policy speech this week. And Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Washington, visiting both the White House and Capitol Hill on Tuesday and Wednesday.
