To subscribe, please send me an email at aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org) ** Attack Thwarted ------------------------------------------------------------ A French national, apparently angered by the surge of Muslim migrants into Europe, has been arrested trying to smuggle explosives and firearms for possible use in attacks during a major soccer tournament in France, officials in Ukraine said today. The suspect is said to be motivated by “ultra-nationalist” views and had planned attacks against 15 targets, including a mosque, a synagogue, and infrastructure in France during this month’s UEFA Euro 2016 soccer championship, as the Washington Post’s Andrew Roth reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/french-suspect-arrested-for-alleged-attack-plot-during-soccer-tournament-ukraine-says/2016/06/06/199d7c73-9546-421c-89af-1a1d59989fc1_story.html) . ** Mr. Modi Comes to Washington ------------------------------------------------------------ A little more than two years ago, the US wouldn’t let Narendra Modi into the country. This week, India’s prime minister will have the honor of addressing a joint meeting of Congress, as Bloomberg’s Angela Greiling Keane and Vrishti Beniwal report (http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2016-06-06/once-banned-modi-to-address-congress-as-india-shifts-toward-u-s) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Rick Rossow today wrote a new Critical Questions (https://www.csis.org/analysis/prime-minister-modi%E2%80%99s-visit-washington) (CSIS’s signature series of asked & answer short papers). ** Not on the Same Page ------------------------------------------------------------ High-level talks meant to steady often fractious US-China relations are instead showing the limits of cooperation in one of the Obama administration’s last major negotiations with Beijing on economic and security matters, as Lingling Wei and Felicia Schwartz of the Wall Street Journal report (http://www.wsj.com/articles/beijings-south-china-sea-claims-cloud-u-s-china-talks-1465180495) . And, as Keith Johnson and Dan De Luce of Foreign Policy report (http://foreignpolicy.com/2016/06/06/europeans-push-back-against-beijing-in-the-south-china-sea/) , France has joined the South China Sea debate, calling for more European naval patrols in contested waters. For more on the contested waters of the South China Sea, Johnson and De Luce also wrote an excellent piece (http://foreignpolicy.com/2016/06/02/a-court-youve-never-heard-of-is-about-to-raise-the-stakes-in-the-south-china-sea/) last week on the international tribunal at The Hague. Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) (http://amti.csis.org/) , an interactive micro-website developed with the CSIS iDeas Lab, tracks all of the happenings in maritime Asia. And, CSIS’s Scott Kennedy and the iDeas Lab recently launched an interactive micro-website “Perfecting China, Inc: The 13th Five Year Plan (http://fiveyearplan.csis.org/) .” Plus, CSIS’s Bonnie Glaser and the iDeas Lab recently launched "ChinaPower (http://chinapower.csis.org/) ," an immersive micro-website that provides users with interactive tools and analysis to compare Chinese power with that of other countries. ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 216,000 ------------------------------------------------------------ New offensives launched by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), reportedly with coalition support, have made gains toward the ISIS-held northern Syrian city of Menbij, putting an estimated 216,000 people at risk of displacement. Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (http://reliefweb.int/report/syrian-arab-republic/turkey-syria-flash-update-developments-eastern-aleppo-menbij-4-june-2016) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “At this final S&ED it is unlikely that there will be substantial outcomes because deals have already been reached in areas where they agree. The most difficult areas are left and will likely be inherited by the next U.S. administration.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Bonnie Glaser on the likely outcomes of this year’s US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue. Source: WSJ (http://www.wsj.com/articles/beijings-south-china-sea-claims-cloud-u-s-china-talks-1465180495) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Deeyah.com) Emmy Award–winning filmmaker Deeyah Khan has launched an online magazine called Sister-hood (http://sister-hood.com/) that is aimed at giving Muslim women a voice. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo credit: LAURIE DIEFFEMBACQ/AFP/Getty Images.) This aerial picture taken today shows the scene of a collision late Sunday between a freight train and a passenger train on their way between Liege and Namur, in Saint-Georges-sur-Meuse, Belgium. ** Highly Recommended ------------------------------------------------------------ Via Antonio Garcia Martinez for Vanity Fair, “How Mark Zuckerberg Led Facebook’s War to Crush Google Plus (http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2016/06/how-mark-zuckerberg-led-facebooks-war-to-crush-google-plus?curator=MediaREDEF ) .” ** CSIS Today ------------------------------------------------------------ CSIS’s Strategic Technologies Program cohosted “CCIPS-CSIS Cybercrime Symposium 2016: Cooperation and Electronic Evidence Gathering Across Borders (https://www.csis.org/events/ccips-csis-cybercrime-symposium-2016) ” with the Department of Justice Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS). And CSIS’s Wadhwani Chair in US-India Policy Studies hosted “US-India Economic Ties and the Final Modi-Obama Summit (https://www.csis.org/events/us-india-economic-ties-and-final-modi-obama-summit) .” ** This Town Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join Brookings tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. for “What it will take to deliver on the Paris climate agreement (http://www.brookings.edu/events/2016/06/07-paris-climate-agreement?rssid=UpcomingEvents&utm_source=feedblitz&utm_medium=FeedBlitzRss&utm_campaign=FeedBlitzRss&utm_content=What+it+will+take+to+deliver+on+the+Paris+climate+agreement) .” ** CSIS On Demand ------------------------------------------------------------ As the US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue gets underway in Beijing, watch last week's China Power Project event "Cooperation or Confrontation: US-China Relations on the Eve of the Strategic & Economic Dialogue (https://www.csis.org/events/cooperation-or-confrontation-us-china-relations-eve-strategic-economic-dialogue) ." ** Sounds ------------------------------------------------------------ Author Phil Klay joined Brookings’ Cafeteria podcast (http://www.brookings.edu/research/podcasts/2016/06/phil-klay-on-the-citizen-soldier) to discuss his recent essay “The Citizen-Soldier: Moral Risk and the Modern Military.” ** I Like It Like That ------------------------------------------------------------ The new Fortune 500 list is up, and the digital team at Fortune has figured out a new way to “Visualize the Fortune 500 (http://fortune.com/fortune500/visualizations?iid=recirc_f500landing-zone1) ” with an interactive map. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ “The Music Never Stopped” We’ve been playing a bunch of clips of new artists covering the Grateful Dead. And it has been a smile. But let’s not forget why this new crop of twenty-something musicians are making sure that the Dead’s music never stops evolving. It was highly evolved American roots music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkbzCTggD80) to begin with. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
