Hi Hunter > Attached is an invitation to the US premier of The Magnitsky Act, a new documentary film by Russian Director Andrei Nekrasov. The film is a contrarian take on Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian tax expert whose imprisonment and subsequent death in a Moscow prison generated international attention and led to the 2012 passage by the US government of the "Magnitsky Act." That act, which barred Russian officials believed to be involved in Mr. Magnitsky's death from entering the US, prompted the Russian government to cancel hundreds of orphan adoptions of Russian children then in process by US citizens. No such adoptions have been permitted since. > > There was a story about this film on page 6 in today's Nee York Times. > > Mr. Nekrasov's film explodes the common view that Mr. Magnitsky was a whistleblower, killed when he called attention to a large-scale, state-sponsored theft of taxes paid by companies owned by Hermitage Capital Management, an investment fund headed by William Browder. Mr. Browder, who features prominently in the film, has spent years convincing international audiences that Mr. Magnitsky's death symbolizes the most ruthless and rapacious side of Vladimir Putin's Russia. > > > > Mr. Nekrasov, widely recognized as a rebel filmmaker, has directed and produced numerous documentaries and television programs, most notably A Russia of One's Own, Pasternak, The Prodigal Son, and Children's Stories: Chechnya) His first drama production, Springing Lenin, received the UNESCO prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993, while his feature, Lubov and Other Nightmares (2001) won recognition at numerous festivals worldwide, including Sundance and Berlin. Many of Mr. Nekrasov's works are harshly critical of Putin's Russia. > > > > In May, the European television channel ARTE was scheduled to air The Magnitsky Act in a worldwide broadcast premier. Those plans were scotched, however, after Mr. Browder threatened legal action against the network. Similarly, a showing of the film in late April before the European Parliament was also canceled. > > It is being shown on Monday evening at the Neuseum. If you're in town I hope you will come and see it. It's the beginning of the process to restore US adoptions of Russian children. > Best, Ed > > > > > > > <Magnitsky Act Invite.pdf> Sent from my iPhon
