YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG! TV Ad Spending, per NBC's Mark Murray: Team Bush, $81.9 million ...Team Rubio, $67.3 million ... Team Sanders, $58 million ... Team Clinton, $49.5 million ... Team Cruz, $36 million ... Team Trump, $18.8 million! http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8847a7bce1f6015cda7be6d7f4f859cf75cc9bc95139d95e5819b38ccdd3eed1
Good Thursday morning - loving the short week. It's 46 days to Cleveland, 53 days to Philly, and 159 days to Election Day.
BREAKING - "Another poll shows Sanders, Clinton even in California," by Nick Gass: In "the latest Field Poll released Thursday ... Clinton leads Sanders 45 percent to 43 percent, with 12 percent undecided or unreported." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8847a7bce1f6015c3f5d9a82461f8d2e905a3716a008fbcae2308ea4d89cf478
REID "FEISTY ... plainly energized by the looming battle for the White House and Senate control" - "Reid unloads: McConnell 'cuddled up' with Trump -- In a POLITICO interview, the outgoing Democratic leader says he'll spend the next five months making GOP candidates eat Trump's words," by Burgess Everett in North Las Vegas, Nev.: "'It's easy to do: The Senate leadership is enthralled by Trump. "He's the guy. He's going to carry on the standards of the Republican Party." Wow,' Reid said in the dingy campaign headquarters of House candidate Ruben Kihuen. 'My job is to tell the people that Mitch McConnell is one of the reasons we have Trump' ...
"Reid also weighed in on the Adelson family's purchase this year of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the state's largest newspaper. Reid has feuded with the paper's conservative editorial board for much of his political career, and he called Adelson immediately after learning of the sale. 'Sheldon, doesn't matter what you do with the editorial policy, it couldn't be any worse ... Secondly, hire some reporters,' Reid recounted telling Adelson, searching for a copy of the newspaper to demonstrate how thin it is. 'It's terrible, and you know what? We have a lot going on here. So, I'm glad he bought it.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8847a7bce1f6015ca74963d0ac65ccd401302b02d56b9d68ce2dfd53537d12a3
30 YEARS AGO TODAY -- June 2, 1986: opening day of gavel-to-gavel coverage of Senate floor via C-SPAN2. Very funny YouTube of classic senators joking about blue shirts and "the eye shadow," plus the late Howell Heflin on "styling mousses," and Bob Dole in his prime. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8847a7bce1f6015c62c6b24dc21d7a4fcb218ec0abb057331382520f59472361
SCORCHING #THISTOWN -- ERIC ALTERMAN on The Nation, "False Equivalence Is Distorting the 2016 Election Coverage: The media's need to cover 'both sides' of every story makes no sense when one side has little regard for the truth": A "significant roadblock ... is elite journalists' intense but unspoken commitment to an ideology that used to be called 'High Broderism' (a term coined during the Clinton wars of the 1990s and derived from the name of the late Washington Post reporter and pundit David Broder). This journalistic ideology has since been renamed 'Fournierism' in some quarters, after Ron Fournier ...
"According to media scholar Jay Rosen, adherents to this philosophy exhibit a universal 'contempt for purists, the praise for moderates, and the fuzzy pragmatism that is also called "bipartisanship."' Fournierism underlies not only both-sides-do-it journalism but also the political posturing of most of the prestigious pundits and so-called experts who populate the nation's op-ed pages and Sunday roundtables." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8847a7bce1f6015c761c27aa97dbc41ba83c3de43f134207cd8537ae7deb9d48
DRIVING THE DAY -- Preview of Hillary Clinton's National Security Address today at 2:30 p.m. ET in San Diego (The Prado at Balboa Park), released by senior policy adviser Jake Sullivan: "[Y]ou will hear in her speech a confidence in America and our capacity to overcome the challenges we face while staying true to our values -- a strong contrast to Donald Trump's incessant trash-talking of America. ... Clinton will speak extensively about the reasons why Donald Trump is unqualified to be our commander-in-chief.
"She will rebuke a litany of dangerous policies that Trump has espoused, ranging from nuclear proliferation to endorsing war crimes, from denouncing NATO to banning Muslims. ... But Clinton's critique will go beyond specific policies and she'll make clear that the choice in this election goes beyond partisanship: Donald Trump is unlike any presidential nominee we've seen in modern times and he is fundamentally unfit for the job."
BEHIND THE CURTAIN -- "Clinton Image Control -- Emails: Clinton staff reviewed remarks, questions for events," by AP's Jack Gillum, Chad Day and Stephen Braun: "Clinton's preparedness appears in contrast with ... Trump ... The newly revealed exchanges, which surfaced in open-records requests, show ... the campaign still injects itself into the minute details of the candidate's appearances down to the stemless glassware in her green room.
"That fixation on planning has sometimes pulled local officials uncomfortably into the political arena. ... Clinton's campaign ... suggested questions that [South Carolina's Greenville Technical College President Keith] Miller could pose [during a July 2015 visit] such as, 'We have a number of students who have a financial need - what do we need to do to make college affordable?' ... Miller dismissed the suggestions, calling them 'bad questions' and said he would develop his own. 'Probably after hearing her speech.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8847a7bce1f6015ca920af0d9ec2f0a2fc1c2329503d44d51961c0ddfd8958d3
TOP TALKER - WashPost A1, bottom of page, "Pentagon official identified as culprit in [Capitol Hill] parking caper," by John Woodrow Cox: "[T]he nanny's license plates were stolen from her SUV ... Two days after that, another plate was stolen. Then, in late April, the thief struck once more - but this time the couple caught him on a video camera they had mounted inside their home's front window. ... [P]olice identified him as Bryan Whitman, [principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs,] who has worked at the Defense Department for more than two decades.
"After handing over the plates to police and being charged with three counts of misdemeanor theft, Whitman, 58, agreed to a deal on Tuesday that would lead to the case's dismissal if he pays $1,000 in restitution, performs 32 hours of community service, ... and stays away both from the nanny and the woman for whom she works." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8847a7bce1f6015cd4e636375f583cded6ba6cd673b9cdefee7d5cac233a0dcd

'He's good at that. Whether or not that's made him a billionaire, I don't know ... RICH LOWRY on Politico, "The GOP Id: He may not be real conservative, but Donald Trump is a conservative dream candidate": "Few politicians in memory have so powerfully tapped into and expressed the conservative id, which has long yearned for a Republican politician willing to heap the verbal abuse on the Clintons and, especially, on the media that they so manifestly deserve. Except on cable and talk radio, the conservative id tends to get smothered by the hated Republican superego, i.e., 'the establishment.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8847a7bce1f6015c0863eeea316e2a0d01fa007a3cbe6879e83bc08b6b7ce158

** A message from the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI): Hurricane Season is officially underway. Home, auto, and business insurers are committed to assisting policyholders in need, quickly and efficiently. Insurers have a strong track record following even the most devastating of natural disasters. In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, insurers settled more than 130,000 flood claims, with only one percent of claims going to litigation. The private insurance sector paid more than 1,500,000 million Sandy claims from all other insured losses, with less than one percent going to litigation. But there is still work to be done. Insurers are looking at new tools and methods to
improve our response after natural disasters. The industry also is working with Congress to make improvements to the flood insurance system. Building safer, stronger, more resilient communities is a goal for us all. We are all in this together.
