A big congratulations to our recently graduated 8th grade students. The celebration took place at St. Catherine Labourwith Mass celebrated by Fr. Michael Salah followed by a reception hosted by the parent association. Students received awards for highest GPA, best representation of a Miguel Man, and benefitting the most from their San Miguel education. Our new 24 graduates will be attending St. John’s College High School, Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School, DeMatha, Gonzaga, Good Counsel, Sidwell Friends, St. Albans, St. Anselm’s, St. Vincent Pallotti, and Archbishop Carroll. These students received over $380,000 in scholarships and financial aid from area high schools, enabling them to continue their high-quality education at the secondary level. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lasallian Mass Mass with St. John's College High School Each year on May 15, Lasallians honor St. John Baptist de La Salle, the founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. We celebrate the feast of our patron saint at an annual Mass with fellow Lasallian school St. John’s College High School. Celebrating our shared heritage is an opportunity to reflect on this patron saint of teachers, whose dedication to providing Christian education to the poor is reflected in the very mission of our school. At the Mass, Eighth grader Mario Luna was able to thank the St. John's community for their generous fund drive held by the English department on behalf of San Miguel and share how grateful we are for their support. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Field Day Fun For the first time this year, students were split up into four “Houses” that mixed students of various grades to foster greater inter-school unity and gave students opportunities to earn points for good grades and admirable behavior. The House System brought a twist to our annual field day this year as the Houses ended the year with their points neck and neck. Thus, the yearlong House Competition culminated in this year’s Field Day Championship where students had the chance to earn enough points for their House to win the entire school year. The students competed in four challenges: soccer, kick ball, water balloon challenge, and whacky relay. The Red House won the day’s Field Day Championship, but ultimately the Green House students were strong competitors and had enough overall points to clinch the House Championship. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Christ Child Society and San Miguel Host First Book Fair The Christ Child Society Kennedy Guild hosted San Miguel’s first ever Book Fair, generously providing a brand new reading book for each student to enjoy over the summer. In addition to picking out their new books, students were also given the opportunity to choose from bins full of used books. Trials of Apollo,Percy Jacksonbooks, andThe 5th Waveseries were the most popular books sold—though students were allowed to bring their own money to purchase fun books and educational games. We nearly sold out of Rubicks Cubes! The Kennedy Guild graciously purchased books for students, provided volunteers to assist with running the event, and even fulfilled some items from our teacher wish lists. At the end of the Book Fair, we’d made enough in school rewards to fulfill the wish lists of every teacher who requested books or educational games for their classrooms and the library. Wow! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Student Quotes Students Share What They Love about San Miguel Mr. Bailey asked students at the conclusion of the school year what their favorite part of San Miguel was. Even we were impressed and inspired by their answers! San Miguel has open doors to me that I would never thought would open. Mario L., 8th grade The reason I like San Miguel is that the teachers have meetings one by one so that we can get caught up on grades. Armando V., 6th grade I like San Miguel School because I get to make friends, learn, and have fun. Fernando Y., 6th grade I think San Miguel is awesome because it challenges me to work harder and the work is not easy. I think it is also awesome because it's like a 2nd family for me here. I also think that it will help me for the future to prepare for the high schools here in the DMV. I also think that it will help me a lot because when I went to a public school I didn't know what high school I would end up in. It all changed since day 1 at San Miguel when I finally decided what high schools I would want to go to. I'm surprised myself because I'm only in 6th grade and I'm already thinking about high school. I also think that even though we are Hispanics that come from poor families, it's a private school breaking the cycle and changing lives.
