Dear Colleagues:
Growing Impact. Last week in Baltimore we held our first regional Presidents Breakfast,
for the Mid-Atlantic Region, attended by a majority of the school leaders in the
area. The positive energy and worth of this gathering were palpable. We all know
the value, witnessed at this event, of stepping back and entering into an open exchange
of ideas and experience with respected peers. The agenda was simple. We distributed
hard copies of the Annual Impact Report and Executive Summary, and Melodie Wyttenbach
and David Kubacki showed the power of the data we have been collecting - documenting
the efficacy of NativityMiguel schools and their collective impact. Our willingness
to be held accountable, school by school, for student progress and long-term success
through college makes a strong case for the viability of our Network model for educating
children living in poverty -- which in turn measurably bolsters each school's efforts
to sustain the mission. As one school leader said, "It provides a great deal of
credibility for the Network in being so transparent; and I was inspired by what
has been developed over the years and how we're holding on to the ideal."

the past and present staff of Gary Comer our partners in mission. We salute their

The 2011 Executive Summary Report is now available. This report provides a detailed
snapshot of our model- from financial data to information about admissions at individual
schools- based on each school's submission of the Annual Member School Survey.

Georgetown University Collegiate Prep Program: Accepting Applications until March
19th!

We are excited to announce the Network's participation in The Georgetown University
Collegiate Prep Program this summer. The program is a three-week college immersion
experience that will give 45 students from Cristo Rey, KIPP, and NativityMiguel
schools the opportunity to take college-level courses, live in residence halls,
and interact with Georgetown University students as well as other high-achieving
high school students from across the country. The program is geared towards students
who have the records and aspirations to apply to America's most selective colleges
and universities. Over the course of the program, students will explore Washington,
D.C., participate in college-prep workshops, have the opportunity to take a course
in International Relations with Georgetown Professor Anthony Arend, and take writing
and science courses.

The 2012 program will run from July 1st to July 22nd. Applications are due March

Regional President Breakfast Meetings

On March 2nd, the Mid-Atlantic President's met, kicking off the spring regional
breakfast meetings for Presidents. Below you'll find the dates for the following
meetings that will run from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

the southern part of the Mid-West.

Congratulations to the Students of Academy Prep St. Petersburg!

Results from the Pinellas County Science Fair in Florida are in and the students
of Academy Prep St. Petersburg are receiving top honors! Participation in the
annual science fair is a requirement for all APSP students. This year it resulted
in two 8th graders receiving top honors in their respective categories as they competed
against students from other prestigious private and public schools.

Eighth graders A'moya received 1st place in the Physics category at Pinellas Regional
level. She is the first Academy Prep student to receive this honor. She will now
be taking her project, entitled "Refraction Action," to the Florida State Science
and Engineering Fair. A'moya's project focuses on how water temperature affects
the refraction of light passing through water. Damaya, also an 8th grader, extracted
DNA from various fruits, built a homemade electrophoresis chamber, and earned 2nd
place in the Microbiology category with her challenging project.

The success of these young ladies clearly reflects their intelligence and drive;
but it must also be attributed to the diligence of Mr. Ravi Fernando, the girls'
Science Teacher. Mr. Fernando has created an intensive Science curriculum with
much time allotted to Science Fair projects, in addition to the numerous interactive
experiments and activities he plans.

All students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades began working on their projects in
September while simultaneously juggling their other demanding academic and extracurricular
responsibilities. In January, their efforts culminated with a school-wide Science
Fair judged by community volunteers and members of the Board of Trustees. Six teams
were selected to represent Academy Prep in the Pinellas Regional Science and Engineering
Fair in early February, of which a school record of five teams placed. We congratulate
all the students at Academy Prep St. Petersburg for their hard work, thank Mr. Fernando
for his dedication, and wish A'Moya good luck as she heads to the Florida State
Competition in April!

Network Star of the Month

This month we honor a visionary leader, who ten years ago could not have imagined
that he would found a school that would have such a profound impact on the lives
of the students and families of Washington Jesuit Academy, their communities and
the community that has come to be the supporters of WJA over the years.

Bill came to WJA from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC in 2001 where
he worked as Assistant Dean of Students, and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid.
At that time he and a core group of like minded folks, together with the Jesuit
Communities in the DC area, began to discuss an answer to the pressing question
of how to better serve the District's most vulnerable - adolescent young men.
Fast forward to today and in line with the NativityMiguel model and Jesuit education
principles, WJA strives to provide a safe haven of care, support, learning, accountability
and encouragement for the students that pass through its doors.
A native of Kensington, MD, where he lives with his wife Sue and their twins Brad
and Maya, Bill has dedicated much of his time to providing a positive environment
for young people. Realizing that we are stronger together as a Network of Schools,
and wanting to do his part in strengthening the Network, Bill accepted the position
of NMNS Board Chair last Spring. As a school president Bill relates well to the
challenges our schools face and has a sharp focus on where we need to go as a Network.
Bill brings a great deal of energy and vitality to anything he undertakes and his
"nothing is impossible attitude" is vital to the success of the Academy.

Together with the students of WJA, we raise our hands in thanks for Bill's good
work.
