By Theodoric Meyer | 06/20/2016 10:00 AM EDT With Elena Schneider, Kevin Robillard and Daniel Lippman The following newsletter is an abridged version of Campaign Pro's Morning Score. For an earlier morning read on exponentially more races - and for a more comprehensive aggregation of the day's most important campaign news - sign up for Campaign Pro today. (http://www.politicopro.com/proinfo) FLORIDA WEEK - Get ready for a week jam-packed with all things Florida: Sen. Marco Rubio's huge decision of whether or not to run for Senate looms over this week, and there's plenty of other news circulating around the race, too. - "Jolly's survey shows a big lead over Crist," by POLITICO Florida's Marc Caputo: "Rep. David Jolly once believed he couldn't win his newly redrawn congressional seat against former Gov. Charlie Crist, but the Republican's campaign is showcasing a new poll that shows the congressman is in a surprisingly strong position after he dropped out of the U.S. Senate race and announced his re-election bid. Jolly is beating the Democrat Crist by 50-38 percent with 12 percent undecided, according to a survey by his campaign's longtime pollster, McLaughlin & Associates. A memo highlighting aspects of the poll of 400 registered voters in Florida's 13th Congressional District was completed Friday, when Jolly officially declared he would drop out of the U.S. Senate race and run for re-election." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=06ccd3ad276b332ffc3949d2186b45dd9e1fa06364891de1f14e5fa766d877ce - "Obama cuts ad for Murphy," by POLITICO Florida's Marc Caputo: "President Obama has already endorsed Rep. Patrick Murphy in his U.S. Senate bid, but now the president is making an even bigger contribution, with a radio ad targeted toward African-American voters. Narrated by Obama, the 30-second spot is scheduled to run for three weeks in urban markets on programs like the Glory of Gospel on Star 94.5 in Orlando, and the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show, which is broadcast on stations like 99Jamz in Miami. About 28 percent of the active registered voters in Florida's Democratic Party are African-American - a bloc of voters that could substantially help Murphy in his upcoming Aug. 30 primary against U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson and Pam Keith, an unknown political newcomer who is African-American." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=06ccd3ad276b332f97261b85a03949a3b96131b3f5421b6a6f33f143c46a0813 Days until the 2016 election: 141. Sinclair, busy - Making Political Ads Work! ** SCORE INTERVIEW - Minnesota House candidate Jason Lewis sits down with Campaign Pro's Maggie Severns: "Jason Lewis doesn't want to be your down-ballot Donald Trump. The radio host-turned-candidate in Minnesota's 2nd District drew national attention this spring after opponents spotlighted bombastic, inflammatory comments Lewis has made on the air and in writing. (One example, picked up by the Minneapolis Star Tribune: "If you don't want to own a slave, don't. But don't tell other people they can't.") Lewis is also using his celebrity and name recognition to generate support, not unlike Trump. But during a swing through Washington last week, Lewis presented himself as friendly, wonky and uninterested in Trump-style politicking." Here's our Q&A: - How do you feel about opponents tying you to Donald Trump? "They're trying to do that. It started not long after we got in last fall. People said, 'This is an easy target, we'll get him to flame out early. And we'll start taking his words out of context, and throw anything out there, and hope something sticks.' Guess what? People in the district said, 'I've been listening to Jason Lewis for 20 years. That wasn't the Jason Lewis I was listening to.' And it fell flat, and we've thrived since then." - What do you think of the presumptive GOP presidential nominee? "I said long ago that I'd support someone at the top of the ticket. He's not my first choice. But I'm not going to do something that would help Hillary Clinton become president." - So you'd rather not people tie you to Donald Trump. What kind of Republican do you want to be? "It's not one of my favorite questions, because I'm going to be Jason Lewis. I'm going to be my own man. I'm going to be independent. If Ron Wyden has some good views on health care, which he does, I'm going to reach out to him as a House member and say, 'Let's put something together.' I'll reach across the aisle to anyone I agree with. When I was on the air a long time ago, you know who my guest host was? [Late Democratic Sen.] Paul Wellstone - numerous times. And I enjoyed the heck out of it." The haul gives the super PAC nearly $12 million in cash on hand. That's almost double what House Majority PAC had on hand at this point last cycle. - Colorado Republican Senate candidates release fundraising numbers: Jack Graham leads the way in pre-primary fundraising among Colorado's Senate Republicans, according to figures released by three of the five campaigns. Graham, a former Colorado State University athletic director, raised $124,000 during the pre-primary period and augmented that with $500,000 of his own money, bringing his self-funding total up to $1.5 million. Graham's campaign spent $684,000, which would leave his cash on hand around $880,000. Former state Rep. Jon Keyser raised approximately $113,000 and loaned his campaign another $50,000, leaving him with about $173,000 on hand. And former Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier raised $57,500 and ended the pre-primary period with just under $20,000 in cash on hand. Darryl Glenn, who has benefited from outside spending by Senate Conservatives Fund, and Robert Blaha, another self-funder, have not yet released their pre-primary numbers. - Ted Cruz also endorsed Glenn on Friday, POLITICO's Burgess Everett reports. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=06ccd3ad276b332f634e4889d3f74ff5d9ad6256514854cf1a15d3fec56f0d9e NEW THIS MORNING - Progressive nonprofit's poll shows gun issue hurting Ayotte: A new poll conducted for the pro-gun control group Americans for Responsible Solutions shows Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan leading GOP Sen. Kelly Ayotte, 49 percent to 45 percent, following a $1 million ad buy from the group attacking Ayotte for her 2013 votes against background check legislation. That's an improvement for Hassan. In a poll from before the ads aired, Hassan had 45 percent to Ayotte's 43 percent. The poll also found Ayotte's favorability was now roughly split, 45 percent favorable to 46 percent unfavorable. Before the ads, she had a positive reputation. The survey found 89 percent of New Hampshire voters support barring people on terrorist watch lists from purchasing guns. Global Strategy Group conducted the polls of 400 likely voters on May 25 and 26, then again on June 15 and 16. The margin of error for both polls was plus or minus 4.9 percentage points. Kelly Ayotte's campaign in hitting Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan for her out-of-state travel with a new issue ad. Ayotte's campaign has highlighted Hassan's trips out of state to raise money to portray her as an "absentee governor." "Governor Hassan proposed increasing spending by a billion dollars, and taxpayers pay tens of thousands of dollars for state troopers to travel with Hassan to non-official, out-of-state political events and fundraisers," the TV ad's narrator says. "Expenses that should be paid for with political dollars, not our tax dollars." "Obama won't say it, but I will: Radical Islamic terrorists are killing Christians in Syria. In Orlando, ISIS has brought their war to America," Thomas says in the ad. "I led the fight against Obama's plan to bring dangerous Syrian refugees to Florida. What's more, we should stop all immigration from countries that harbor terrorists." The words "Agrees with Trump" appear on the screen. "Unlike Obama, when it comes to security, I'll put America first," Thomas says, echoing one of Trump's catchphrases. Thomas is locked in competitive primary for an open, strongly Republican seat. She's been endorsed by the Club for Growth, which has staunchly opposed Trump. In a dozen interviews, major Democratic donors in the financial services industry said they saw little chance that Clinton would pick the liberal firebrand as her vice presidential nominee. These donors despise Warren's attacks on the financial industry. But they also think her selection would be damaging to the economy. And they warned that if Clinton surprises them and taps Warren, big donations from the industry could vanish."http://politi.co/28IrZD0 - "Anti-Trump delegates raising money for staff and a legal defense fund," by The Washington Post's Ed O'Keefe: "Supporters of a growing anti-Donald Trump movement announced plans Sunday to raise money for staff and a possible legal defense fund as they asked new recruits to help spread the word with less than a month until the Republican National Convention. Having started with just a few dozen delegates, organizers also said Sunday that they now count several hundred delegates and alternates as part of their campaign. ... The group is led by convention delegates seeking to block Trump at the GOP convention next month in Cleveland by changing party rules so that they can vote however they want - instead of in line with the results of state caucuses and primaries." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=06ccd3ad276b332f34bdb0c1da9fc0442fa8f33a20ab621ff2124f2dcdd94f61 - "Inside Clinton's plan to win over millennials," by POLITICO's Darren Samuelsohn: "Now that Hillary Clinton has dispatched Bernie Sanders, she's making a big play for one of his core fan bases: young voters. The first high-profile Sanders staffer, specializing in college student outreach, decamped earlier this month from Burlington to Brooklyn, joining other battleground state aides who had worked for the Vermont senator and are now in Clinton's camp. Advisers to both candidates say more Sanders staffers will be hired soon. ... And talks are ongoing between both campaigns about how to deploy Sanders later this summer and fall as a Clinton surrogate. The Clinton camp wants him to make his largest splash with the young cohort captivated by his Brooklyn-tinged talk of 'revolution.'"http://politi.co/28Iu8MI - "Trump's charity claims could violate fraud laws," by POLITICO's Ben Schreckinger: "If Donald Trump's claims that certain of his commercial ventures benefit charity are untrue, he could be held liable under Section 349 of New York's General Business Law, which forbids deceptive business acts and practices, as well as under charitable solicitation laws, according to legal experts. In promoting products as varied as Trump University, Trump Vodka, a Trump board game, and his new book "Crippled America," the businessman has declared that the proceeds would go to charity. None of Trump's proceeds from Trump University have gone to charity, and only a few hundred dollars of charitable giving related to Trump Vodka has been accounted for." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=06ccd3ad276b332f1417a42126dbafc8eae6da04c7afa8c441ed29c1e916198c CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I don't even talk to them. They make things up, they're fiction. Politico is fiction." - Donald Trump, who criticized POLITICO's coverage of Trump's relationship with the Republican National Committee in an interview with Fox News' Howard Kurtz. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=06ccd3ad276b332fceb9a3abcd289ace1da9951fcf128eefcd58a7aa3fb382dc ** A message from Sinclair Broadcast Group: News, opinions, and entertainment surround us 24/7, yet a fundamental truth remains, whether for competitive races or impactful ballot measures, the TV commercial reigns as the medium for reaching potential voters.
