~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ April 2012 Vision. Value. Plan. What we do is always in dialogue and partnership with our school leaders and I am convinced that is the only way for us to move forward authentically and effectively. Here is what conversations are revealing to me: a deep and abiding commitment to mission; determination to provide deserved and wide ranging educational opportunities for all students; pride in accomplishments; desire to learn from and share with each other at regularly scheduled national Network meetings; genuine concerns about struggling and closing schools; and continued challenges regarding financial sustainability. Within the final point is a careful stewardship of resources, which also includes payment of membership dues to our Network. Allow me to repeat a point made last year when increased membership fees were proposed: We are listening. Please know that the increases were proposed with a conviction that there would be mutual agreement between the Network and schools regarding membership value. We have suggested incremental increases over the course of the next 5 years...As perceived and actual value (shown in real costs of programs and services provided) in the Network increases, so would the fees charged. If 3, 4 or 5 years down the road the Network does not hold up its part of the bargain and present programs or services worth the fees, then revision would be justly called for. I want to stress the increments with which we will increase fees and value, and make a plea for your patience. There is much within this e-News which indicates real value. We also recognize there is more that needs to be done and the Network Board and I are in a full court press to re-build our own resources in order to provide the services you deserve and would value. Please note below the addition to our staff of Stephanie Owen as Regional Coordinator. Our plan is to offer regional meetings during the Fall of this year, moving towards a national Network meeting in the Spring of 2013. Dates and locations will be provided very soon. The Network team joins me in sending you greetings of hope and faith during this Holy Week. May the beauty of this season enliven and inspire you in your important work. Mary Claire Ryan Executive Director ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Notre Dame Middle School is Expanding! After sixteen years of successful operations, Notre Dame Middle School in Milwaukee, WI is expanding to add an elementary program. The co-educational, dual immersion school K-5 is meant to feed into Notre Dame Middle School and other outstanding schools on the near Southside of Milwaukee. The new primary school will offer the same quality educational benefits as Notre Dame Middle School like: -Small class sizes -Catholic faith formation - Dual language instruction - Sponsored by the School Sisters of Notre Dame - Fine arts - Commitment to justice and leadership development - Parental involvement - Proven results For the past year, NDMS Principal Jean Ellman, SSND and President Mary McIntosh, have worked diligently with the NDMS Board of Directors to make this dream a reality. "Providing our community with a primary school is critical to the continued success of the NDMS mission - preparing students for admittance to college-preparatory high schools," says Ellman. Notre Dame Middle School will pull from many of the best practices of dual language instruction that is being offered by another member school Escuela de Guadalupe in Denver, CO. To read more about this exciting expansion please see the following Press Release [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001wo5q_AY85Egsn4C8xxMuagwHUUlIxXNI9n6Lqn77anGHoTH0vNg9PcyHeBlP_CjoafB2VPXJEr4Wg5UwZ1oXPQOAsClTUAngR3sBYYgllRye9Qa8pidXDO-VeJoJsI4PvoIuadrrs5dEuwFPHF55V8fW2zuY8EmTmnU7UtO2m4k0UBKIPkASFfpQuUPbYoX8K8vD5gxlWDU=]. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ South and West Region Collegial Visits Conclude for the 2011-2012 Academic Year This year twelve NativityMiguel Schools located in the South and West Regions participated in Collegial Visits. This data give Network schools the first look into 3rd party verified data for college enrollment, persistence, and graduation. Schools have found these results to be very helpful and have used them to track alumni, make board presentations, update their GSP brochures, and more. On Tuesday, April 17th the Network will host a conference call for GSPs and other school leaders to discuss how they're using their NSC data. Please e-mail David Kubacki at dkubacki@nativitymiguel.org [mailto:dkubacki@nativitymiguel.org] if you're interested in joining this call. A separate invite will be sent next week. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Georgetown University Collegiate Prep Program The Network eagerly awaits the announcement of the students who have been selected for Georgetown's Collegiate Prep Program! Applications are currently being review by Georgetown and will be announced later this week. The program serves rising seniors from three school systems with similar missions: NativityMiguel, Cristo Rey, and KIPP. The goal of the 3-week summer program is to provide information and context around what college is, and also to help participants develop the critical skills needed to be successful in their journey through college. The program focuses very specifically on developing skills in building community, enriching their personal confidence, and preparing them to ask for help when needed. Georgetown has reserved 5 spots for NativityMiguel graduates. The graduates will travel to, live, eat, and learn at the University for the entirety of the program at no cost to them. In fact, since students sacrifice their ability to work during these three weeks, those that successfully complete the program also receive a $500 stipend. We look forward to sharing the exciting news of which students will attend in our May eNews. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ San Miguel Providence - the Spirit of Giving during Lent! Each year during the Lenten season, San Miguel Providence raises money for its "Twin" school in Eritrea, Africa. The San Miguel community has raised a more than $1,800 during Lent - enough to support five students at the Nativity School in Shinara Village, Eritrea for one school year. The school's Lasallian Youth Group has organized a dress down day, a bake sale, and an after school game night. Students who participated paid a small fee which goes towards the money raised. The "Earning for Eritrea" program proves that everyone has something to give. The school places "Earning for Eritrea" jars around the school and students, staff, and visitors contribute to support their African "brothers." This is one of the many ways the students live out the mission of the school. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NACAC Conference Registration is now open!
