CLINTON TAKES BIG CALIFORNIA LEAD, SANDERS FIGHTS ON - "'History made': Clinton claims nomination," by POLITICO's Shane Goldmacher: "Hillary Clinton triumphantly claimed the Democratic nomination for president on Tuesday, calling for party unity to stop Donald Trump as she became the first woman in U.S. history to lead a major-party ticket. ... Clinton is moving to consolidate Democratic support, with the notable help of President Barack Obama, who congratulated Clinton on her victory and spoke with her primary rival Bernie Sanders on Tuesday as the party leadership tries to nudge the Vermont senator to the exits. But Sanders showed no sign of dropping out. "The struggle continues," he said
in Santa Monica, promising to fight until the Democratic convention." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=da5053b4bcade27f1f40eac6fd6518e5f8322bdc57623f89a239a44e0e55d990

- "Inside the bitter last days of Bernie's revolution," by POLITICO's Edward-Isaac Dovere and Gabriel Debenedetti: "There's no strategist pulling the strings, and no collection of burn-it-all-down aides egging him on. At the heart of the rage against Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party, the campaign aides closest to him say, is Bernie Sanders. It was the Vermont senator who personally rewrote his campaign manager's shorter statement after the chaos at the Nevada state party convention and blamed the political establishment for inciting the violence. ... And when Jimmy Kimmel's producers asked Sanders' campaign for a question to ask Donald Trump, Sanders himself wrote the one
challenging the Republican nominee to a debate." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=da5053b4bcade27fd67b98062d832a70f6e5dcefb6c395073525138c62bdd97c

- Post-game analysis by POLITICO's Glenn Thrush: The big question now: What does Bernie Sanders want? The vice presidency isn't on the table. More likely: "A fulsome consideration of more stringent Wall Street regulation (the Clinton campaign has been in quiet talks with Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren on those issues and other for weeks), party platform language that permanently bonds Clinton to her recent anti-free-trade stances, and a coordinated policy to attack income inequality." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=da5053b4bcade27f9882243d2f868e878ad91dc67d9a528b9c8dc04b151f8803

REPUBLICAN HOUSE MEMBER LOSES - "Renee Ellmers becomes first GOP incumbent to lose seat," by Campaign Pro's Elena Schneider: "Rep. George Holding won the Republican primary for a newly redrawn district in North Carolina, beating Rep. Renee Ellmers, who became the first GOP incumbent to lose in a primary this year. Holding, who was first elected in 2012," won easily, with 53 percent of the vote to Ellmers' 24 percent. A third candidate, Greg Brannon, had 23 percent. "Donald Trump backed Ellmers and recorded a last-minute robocall that her campaign released over the weekend. It was the first time the presumptive Republican presidential nominee had intervened in a congressional race this year.
But it failed to make a difference for Ellmers, who faced over $1 million in outside spending from groups including Americans for Prosperity and the Club for Growth, which were unhappy with her House voting record." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=da5053b4bcade27f54eace4e8544d57317475b3415f6483b33c3a6259c105a41

- Harris, Sanchez advance in California Senate race: Democrats Kamala Harris and Loretta Sanchez will both advance to the general election in the race for California's open Senate seat, shutting Republicans out of a Senate contest for the first time since the state adopted its "top two" primary system. Harris, the state attorney general had a commanding lead, with 40 percent of the vote to Sanchez's 17 percent with 57 percent of precincts reporting. Republican Duf Sundheim took third with 9 percent of the vote; 31 other candidates split the rest of the vote.

- Judge wins Democratic Senate primary in Iowa: Former Lt. Gov. Patty Judge won Iowa's Democratic Senate primary, setting up a November showdown with five-term GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley. Judge, who has the endorsement of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, won 48 percent of the vote with every precinct reporting. Her main challenger, state Sen. Rob Hogg, had 39 percent. Judge needed 35 percent of the vote to avoid a convention. Judge only entered the race after Grassley became the face of GOP opposition to President Barack Obama's attempts to replace the late Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court.

Days until the District of Columbia Democratic primary and the Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina and Virginia congressional primaries: 6. Days until the 2016 election: 153.

MORE PRIMARY RESULTS - Democratic race too close to call in CA-21: GOP Rep. David Valadao will advance to the general election, but it's still unclear who his Democratic challenger will be. Emilio Huerta, the son of a labor icon and the preferred candidate of Washington Democrats, and Daniel Parra, his underfunded rival, were neck-and-neck early Wednesday morning and separated by less than a percentage point.

- Knight, Caforio advance in CA-25: Democrat Bryan Caforio will face GOP Rep. Steve Knight in November. With 68 percent of precincts reporting, Knight had 50 percent of the vote and Caforio had 28 percent; a second Democrat, Lou Vince, took 14 percent. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has touted the district, north of Los Angeles, as a potential pickup and was backing Caforio.

- Carbajal advances in CA-24, opponent unknown: Democrat Salud Carbajal will advance to the general election in California's 24th District, an open seat that has attracted a flood of outside spending in recent weeks. But the Associated Press had not made a call for the second slot in the "top two" primary early Wednesday morning. With every precinct reporting, Carbajal led with 33 percent of the vote. Republican Justin Fareed was in second, with 21 percent. Another Republican, Katcho Achadjian, was in third, with 19 percent. And Democrat Helene Schneider was in fourth, with 14 percent of the vote.

- Honda, Khanna advance to CA-17 rematch: Democratic Rep. Mike Honda and Ro Khanna will advance to the general election in California's 17th District for a rematch of their 2014 race, after they finished first and second in their all-party primary.

- Hall, Barragan advance in race for CA-44 open seat: Democrats Isadore Hall and Nanette Barragan both advanced to general election in California's 44th District, in the Los Angeles area. Hall "was met by a process server at his congressional campaign's election party in San Pedro Tuesday night and served with a subpoena in a lawsuit over a real estate deal," The Los Angeles Times reports. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a7961d263d873b08dd3df33ccb13185fc898e2721bded5b54ad48272a1ca202d

- Vernon wins Democratic primary in IA-01 to face Blum: Monica Vernon won the Democratic primary to take on GOP Rep. Rod Blum in Iowa's 1st District, which is widely considered one of Democrats' biggest pickup opportunities in the fall. Vernon had 68 percent of the primary vote to 32 percent for Pat Murphy in a rematch of the 2014 primary, when Murphy won the nomination but lost to Blum in the general election.

- Mowrer wins Democratic primary in IA-03: Jim Mowrer won the Democratic nod to take on GOP Rep. David Young in Iowa's 3rd District this November. Mowrer had 50 percent of the primary vote to businessman Mike Sherzan's 36 percent.

- Budd beats 16 other Republicans to win NC-13 primary: Ted Budd has won the GOP primary for the newly redrawn, open North Carolina 13th District, a safely Republican seat. Budd, a gun range owner, won with only 20 percent of the vote in a field of 17 Republicans. State Reps. John Blust and Julia Howard both trailed with 10 percent. Budd had the backing of the Club for Growth.

- North Carolina incumbents win their primaries: Three North Carolina incumbents - GOP Reps. Walter Jones and Richard Hudson and Democratic Rep. Alma Adams - all survived their primaries in newly drawn districts, while GOP Rep. Robert Pittenger is locked in a tight battle for his seat. Jones and Hudson both won about 65 percent of the vote, while Adams took 43 percent in a seven-way contest. Pittenger's race, in the 9th District, remained too close to call early Wednesday morning; Pittenger led a challenger, Mark Harris, by a scant 142 votes with all precincts reporting.

- King beats back primary challenge in IA-04: GOP Rep. Steve King crushed a more moderate primary challenger initially viewed as a serious threat on Tuesday. King had 65 percent of the vote to state Sen. Rick Bertrand's 35 percent with all precincts reporting.

- Norcross dispatches challenger in NJ-01: Democratic Rep. Donald Norcross easily won his primary tonight, dispatching a Bernie Sanders supporter in New Jersey's 1st District. Norcross led Alex Law, a 25-year-old political newcomer, 70 percent to 30 percent, with 98 percent of precincts reporting.

- Lance fends off repeat challenger in NJ-07: GOP Rep. Leonard Lance shrugged off a repeat primary challenger in New Jersey's 7th District. The congressman led David Larsen, a wealthy businessman running against him for the third time, 54 percent to 33 percent, with nearly every precinct reporting.

THE FOLD - FIRST IN SCORE - Burr reserves $5.1 million for fall TV ads: GOP Sen. Richard Burr's campaign has made $5.1 million worth of late summer and fall TV reservations in North Carolina, starting Aug. 23 and running through the November general election. A campaign spokesman said that this was the first round reservations and that additional buys will be made.

AIR SUPPORT - Chamber airing another attack ad in Pennsylvania: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is out with another TV ad attacking Democrat Katie McGinty in Pennsylvania, this one airing in the Pittsburgh media market. (Two earlier ads had run in Philadelphia.) Oddly, it's the second ad in the Pennsylvania race to feature a hamster. "For more than 20 years, Katie McGinty has tried to tax every type of energy she could find," a narrator says as the hamster runs on a wheel.. "As of now, this is just about the only energy source she hasn't tried to tax in Pennsylvania." Watch the ad: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a7961d263d873b08bdc319e844d04329b7fe4a9260e644b50e76c8b825b6ec6e

REQUEST DENIED - Ayotte asks One Nation to stop airing ad: New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte called on the GOP nonprofit, One Nation, to take down their ad attacking Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan over the state's heroin epidemic. "No one should be playing politics with the heroin epidemic. One Nation should take down their ad," Ayotte tweeted. But One Nation didn't seem to want to play ball. "One Nation is an issue organization discussing a topic of vital importance to the people of New Hampshire," Ian Prior, a spokesman, said in a statement. "Governor Hassan's failures on this issue are well-documented and we continue to discuss them."

- Ayotte also privately voiced her unhappiness with Donald Trump's repeated attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel, The New York Times' Jennifer Steinhauer, Jonathan Martin and David M. Herszenhorn report. She "used a closed-door luncheon to complain that Mr. Trump's comments were obscuring the party's economic message and urged [Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, who is close to Trump] to tell Mr. Trump to drop his jeremiad against the judge, according to two senators present who requested anonymity to reveal private conversations." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a7961d263d873b08debd3bab3b20538ffab911686f6ae38319956da16bb201e6

TRUMP REAX - Kirk: 'I cannot and will not support my party's nominee,'" by POLITICO's Seung Min Kim: "Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, the most endangered Senate Republican up for reelection this fall, said Tuesday that he will not back Donald Trump for president after a long line of controversial comments from the presumptive GOP nominee. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a7961d263d873b0851dbfcfd8103f8d8dcc27efd478d11710007fa69f08c81bb

- GOP Rep. Lee Zeldin, who's endorsed Trump, took an alternate approach on CNN on Tuesday. Zeldin defended Trump to an extent, saying he didn't think Trump "feels he's of a superior race" to Curiel. He also went after President Barack Obama. "You can easily argue that the president of the United States is a racist, with his policies and his rhetoric," Zeldin said. Anna Throne-Holst, one of Zeldin's Democratic opponents in his Long Island swing district, quickly demanding he apologize and rescind his endorsement. "Zeldin has made it abundantly clear that he and Trump are one and the same," Throne-Holst said in a statement.

GOLDEN TICKETS - Sanders endorses two more House challengers: Bernie Sanders has endorsed another pair of House challengers in a fundraising email sent to supporters on Tuesday. Sanders asked his email list to donate money to Eric Kingson, one of three Democrats running for freshman GOP Rep. John Katko's upstate New York seat, and Paul Clements, a repeat challenger to veteran GOP Rep. Fred Upton in Michigan. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a7961d263d873b08536a8590826c2d622f87b38fc10115dbf6cc15da7ea2a9c4

Only 32 percent of Florida voters approve of Rubio's job perform, the poll found, and 54 percent disapprove. But he's virtually tied with Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy in a potential head-to-head Senate matchup, with Murphy taking 44 percent and Rubio taking 43 percent.
