Basic. And on just about every issue -- from health care to education to the economy -- that is the choice we face. That's the choice." First Lady Michelle Obama in remarks before the Democratic National Committee in Louisville, Kentucky last week. "I've also decided: No more debates. If we're going to do another debate, he's going to sit in the audience and watch me. And that'll be it." Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, in comments on how to improve her husband's debate performance. "Disqualified, disqualified, disqualified." Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) on candidate Mitt Romney's record - including health care - that he claimed would make it impossible for Romney to draw a clear contrast with President Obama in the general election. The Trials and Travails of Diet Soda Consumption - In a study released last week by the Journal of General Internal Medicine, people who drank diet soda every day were 44% more likely than non-drinkers to suffer a heart attack or stroke. While the study did not confirm that the sugar-free drinks are to blame for the problem, it clearly showed a connection. Growth in Healthcare Jobs Outpaces All Other Industries - The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported last week that the growth in healthcare jobs is the highest of all industries. The healthcare sector will increase its total workforce by 5.6 million jobs over the next decade. Affordable Care Act (ACA) Extends Preventive Services Availability - Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced last week that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) provided approximately 54 million Americans with at least one new free preventive service in 2011 through their private health insurance plans. If Only We Could Be So Good - I recently learned that over the period 2005 through 2010, the odds of dying in a fatal airline crash in the United States are 1 in 49 million. That rate represents a decline of 93% from the period of 1994 through 1998. Over the last two years, the American public has been swept up in the growing iStuff craze. So, now you should expect another phenomenon over the next two years. The use of social media is going to change the way we do everything. It will alter who, where, what, how and when healthcare services are delivered. In fact, the use of social media will foster the greatest change in communications in healthcare since the adoption of cellular telephone technology - and it will be far more sweeping in its impact. The Golden Anniversary of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is this month, a rather humbling milestone considering that technology in almost every other industry has moved forward at warp speed. In February 1962, a prototype EMR [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1109399610956&s=6409&e=001kPZQMa1XJGFys_ZnPg4bhVfTWIphQeVat_6ec8P-rLpWwxW_EZHtgm9Zto6oaCQQ_kzyCeP_hoQzf_3iROvQ9NEn65irioRyZuIY0Gj7iRWAs69sEdDzgL1TDtvclvbS6_lyUpyUUPbxJSh5t1Ssw80DiNE387Mw9QPkLZo174bpCxv1UfU6HwmZ-Stppc7I8Oo3k5aFuN6JiCgO9bj-jCvWAeEQF5FbRdm2MsLy8xJfJ2_ZuvqQDuAT5i0AaG6vIvd6j9GEBQlfT7lfshLUSWUxGi75hNnGmUVLv8nTSswk-OaWLXa5IfKzl2-DJC-uogjWBkxHAaT-nSAW75_c-SrEvuliq82zMt9z5sm_5M0OpwEmaIKau0nAe2buhgrJN0L1Cmyaj0_sbYG8z0_5rFwzHbjZKWdGaMRpeNwp6EgStM2mzfd5mw==] was unveiled by IBM at Akron Children's Hospital. Given our contemporary view, the technology was nascent and primitive with IBM's clunky [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1109399610956&s=6409&e=001kPZQMa1XJGF2qcjtr7D_e8bDovfeCpoWAP6sKS37FxEL-DERFcXx8v1IcwSfhxeqPjiREWXieHcx7Z9hgYEJ-xQdvXNCyUN-xMvSTbzicnZ9uQIZmDPZpczHjrwYIiMHqo7FmLRB9pThFt_Fv727odDA3ge3g2BBGZZciqd29RsTQE9UoaLINA==] mainframe weighing in at more than a ton. But, despite today's contemporary view, Akron's EMR was ahead of its time. The EMR advantages touted by Akron back then - eliminating medication errors, relieving clinicians of paperwork, tracking correlation of diseases - which were all primary reasons for moving toward deploying of EMRs, still partly elude us. Today, physicians and other clinicians continue to wrestle with the value in deploying EMRs. The problem isn't the technology, which is just a tool. Rather, it is how we use the tool in our everyday lives. We remain on the path forged by work started at Akron Children's Hospital 50 years ago. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly The ongoing saga... The Good - The surge in job growth was greater than expected in January when the U.S. economy added more than 243,000 jobs - the largest gain in nine months. Unemployment fell to 8.3% from a high of just over 10% in 2009. While the USA still needs to recover an additional 5.5 million jobs to get us back to where we were in December 2007, the surge is heartening... The Bad - The latest figures from the government show an increase in the number of uninsured from 14.8% to 15.1% over the period of 2009 to 2010. If the "age weight" is removed (i.e., taking out those individuals over the age of 65), the uninsured represented 18.2% versus 18.4%, respectively. So, the problem is not going away and the trend, while not dramatic, continues in the wrong direction... The Ugly - Number 1: Most of us are getting kind of tired of the slugfest going on over the airwaves. Thank goodness, we don't live in the states where the primaries are occurring. It's bad enough without them. Can you imagine life with them? Number 2: Despite efforts by the USA and other nations, aid agencies could not evacuate the injured from the central Syrian city of Homs as the violence continues in strife-ridden Syria. Opposition groups report continued killing of innocents across Syria over the last several weeks. All of this occurred in the face of a nationwide referendum on a new constitution which the Assad government touts as the centerpiece for government political reform... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sponsors Dearborn Advisors, LLC [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1109399610956&s=6409&e=001kPZQMa1XJGH1NWE1kOkyFgde-8yr6qS0MxjGXsBn684PYy1zZfHeRV5XDu5aUGGUsK7iNivZExILYGKGHDeVfUYfdmPfkIQiT-fsVoUtGBMy5z7hL7zuPBnccekAiaxiQPhBgesCQFqcwfjktsbQmO2WzMKALaSvRiuTIyyvKH22MvTbG-XIfW1ztqRfzWi5kzzlJwxRyU2XqIULiCIo3Ku4gvWvFMGLyZplZYzWOKD0phztguZNM1HCDEeVgneRQVt8ky1_gEsPpktoTG-_3B6zRp7GN9JCoD3Co7--Cv_f0zed_7wjFwwyW5xOgEnrOVi0wyI57sC9uwQ1FlcskA==] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Send to a Colleague [http://ui.constantcontact.com/sa/fwtf.jsp?m=1105336033970&a=1109399610956&ea=hbiden%40rosemontseneca.com] In This Edition Quote Of The Week ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Forward email http://ui.constantcontact.com/sa/fwtf.jsp?llr=svyssnfab&m=1105336033970&ea=hbiden@rosemontseneca.com&a=1109399610956 This email was sent to hbiden@rosemontseneca.com by kevin@creostrategicsolutions.com.
