--------------------------------------------------- MIDDLE SCHOOL TUESDAY LETTER --------------------------------------------------- FROM THE SCHOOL -------------------------------------------------- This Week's Query What mistakes have I made that have helped me learn? Notes from Sally Assembly: Eighth grade drama scenes. Parents are welcome to attend! Tonight! After a great line-up of speakers in April, don't miss Carol Dweck tonight in the Meeting Room from 7-9 PM. Dweck's groundbreaking work has been widely praised for demonstrating that it's not just abilities and talent that brings success but whether we view those with a fixed or growth mindset. Dweck, a Stanford University psychologist, will speak to the combined faculty on Wednesday afternoon. "A good book is one whose advice you believe. A great book is one whose advice you follow. This is a book that can change your life." - Robert J. Sternberg, author of Teaching for Successful Intelligence. Parents of current sixth graders are invited to join us for a preview of 7th grade Wednesday evening in the Middle School Drama Studio at 7:30. A light supper will be served before the meeting, and you will have a chance to meet parents of students who are joining the grade. We welcome parents to join us for Meeting for Worship on Thursday morning at 8:10, also in the Meeting Room. The PA Diversity team is interested in getting feedback from parents about diversity efforts in the MS in two ways. First, we ask you to click on the link below to complete a very brief survey (5 minutes) about diversity. Second, we invite you to attend our parent forum on PA Diversity Efforts in the Middle School on May 13, 6:30-8:30 PM, MS Drama Studio. There will be refreshments and lively discussion. We really want to hear about your thoughts and ideas so we can plan future work in the MS! Thanks. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/G2762K5 Grandparents Day is Friday, May 10th. Please contact the IA office with any questions! Many thanks to all the parent volunteers (and shoppers!) who helped make the Book Fair such a grand success. And a special thank you to Colette Chichester and Lisa Gunty for organizing everything so well. Happy reading! 7th graders Harrison Blain, Jack Blazes, and Jordan Kalai recently traveled to Claremont-McKenna College to participate in the National Debate Tournament. As a team they participated in five debates. They had a great experience and learned a lot! Our Hearst tutoring program has now ended for the year. A total of 29 students gave 130 hours of their time to work with students at our neighbor school. Thanks for this great effort! We have heard about a great summer service-learning opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students. If you would like details, please contact me. Congratulations to these sixth graders whose poems have been recognized by the Parkmont Poetry Festival! Winners: Clara Pierson, Harry Kay, Sophie Horst , Philip DiMeglio, Rachel Blatt. Semi-finalists: Thomas Mills, Christopher Cheng, Patrice McGloin, Lauren Adler, Sophia van der Laan,Noah Portnoy. Great job!
