WELLS FARGO WINNER

Rickie Fowler, at the age of 23 years, 4 months and 23 days, becomes the third player to make the Wells Fargo Championship his first PGA TOUR win. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy is the third-youngest winner of the event, behind Rory McIlroy and Anthony Kim. His win came in his 72nd start on TOUR and it is his 16th top-10 finish in his young career. Fowler is the sixth player in his 20s to win on TOUR in 2012, compared to eleven in their 30s and two in their 40s.

SHORT AND SWEET

Rickie Fowler's 132-yard approach into the 18th green during the playoff at the Wells Fargo Championship had to hit about a two-foot square to be close and he nailed it, using a 51-degree wedge - an unusual loft for a PGA TOUR bag. Fowler had the lofts of his wedges tweaked to close the gap between yardages and it was perfect for his first TOUR win. "I hit a pitching wedge in regulation from 141, and it flew just past the hole about 144 or so, and I had 133 this time around," Fowler explained after his win. "So it was basically a 10 yard gap, which is about what I had and Joe my caddie made a good call and said if there's any bit of help and you're comfortable hitting 51, it's a perfect
club. We went with it, and it turned out perfect. Playing against those two guys, I know that they're going to make birdie at some point, and I didn't want to sit there and try and make pars and stay in it. I had a good number, and I wanted to make birdie."

THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2011 PLAYERS Champion, K.J. Choi relied on his short game and putting to fuel his victory at TPC Sawgrass. For the week, Choi successfully salvaged par or better on 17 of 22 missed greens, ranking 3rd in the field for scrambling. He is the third consecutive PLAYERS champion to rank inside the top 8 for scrambling.

Choi ranked T-10th in the field for driving accuracy last year and six of the last seven PLAYERS champions have ranked inside the top 15 for driving accuracy in their respective victories. Distance, however, isn't the advantage you might think at TPC Sawgrass. Choi averaged 280 yards in driving distance, which ranked him T43. The last time someone won the THE PLAYERS and was inside the top 10 for distance was Adam Scott in 2004 who averaged 297.5 yards. In nearly a decade each winner has consistently in the middle or near the back of the field in distance off the tee. No one personified that more than the 2005 winner, Fred Funk who averaged 253.4 yards and ranked 80th in the field.

On the greens, according to ShotLink, is where Choi separated himself where he gained over 8 strokes on the field with the putter. He ranked 2nd in the field for strokes gained putting. The last two PLAYERS champions have ranked 1st and 2nd in the field for strokes gained - putting. The average TOUR player, according to ShotLink, has a 38% chance of making a putt from 10 feet. For the week, Choi converted 6 of 12 efforts when putting from 10 to 15 feet (50%). Putt for dough takes on a whole new meaning with these stats and especially since the 2012 winner will earn $1.71 million for the effort!

TPC SAWGRASS HOLE #17

Since 2003, 11.2% of all tee shots (3,940 tee shots) end up in the water on the famous 17th hole. According to ShotLink, the 55 square foot greenside bunker on 17 is one of the smallest on THE PLAYERS Stadium Course. Since 2003, just 42 of 3,940 tee shots have found the bunker on 17 (1.1%). There have been 4,344 regulation play tee shots on the 17th hole since the last ace recorded by Miguel Angel Jimenez in 2002 (Rd 1).
