Robert, if you like weekends, eight-hour work days, paid sick leave, a minimum wage - you can thank the labor movement for that.

We wouldn't have the middle class without organized labor -- and the success of the middle class is inextricably linked to the success of labor unions. I believe more strongly than anything that some of the most pressing issues of our time are equity of opportunity, social mobility, and economic inequality. And as proud as I am of CA's extraordinary economic success, nowhere are those issues more present than right here -- because CA is both the richest and the poorest state. And with eight million Californians living in poverty, unless we deal with these issues, our state cannot succeed.

We have to realize that we're all better off when we are all better off. That's a value that California and the labor movement share -- and labor has lived that value throughout its entire history. Unions have always been about the little guy. Always stood up and organized together because they understand another mantra that I think is at the heart of what California is: If you want to go fast in life, you go alone. But if you want to go far, you've got to go together.

But so many values that the labor movement has fought for -- continues to fight for -- are under assault from political forces that don't want to share power with workers and working families. There's never been a more trying time for unions than right now, with so-called "right-to-work" legislation in so many states chipping away at their critical right to collectively bargain and organize. Workers are going to need a champion, and I know deep down that this team is going to be that champion for them.

So let's use Labor Day to remind ourselves of the importance of organized labor, the importance of fighting for working folks and the middle class, the importance of protecting and celebrating immigrant workers who keep our economy and our communities going strong. And let's go further to recommit ourselves to this fight -- because we only succeed when we all succeed.
