Message from Lee

It is a great pleasure to announce that, in response to the Long Range Priorities and their emphasis on service learning, the position of Upper School Director of Community Service will be reconfigured next year to be Upper School Director of Service Learning. David Connell will serve in this role as well as continue the outstanding work he has been performing as Director of Community Service. He will be providing support for faculty, staff, and students who would like to explore service learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. I am grateful that we have access to David’s tremendous commitment and expertise in the area of service learning.

Friday, May 18, is Upper School Community Service Day and advisories will be participating in a variety of service projects throughout Washington, D.C. There will be no classes and students will be back on campus in time for Athletics and PE.

The Upper School Play, MUSEUM, will be performed at 8:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, and at 2:30 pm on Sunday. MUSEUM, a comedy by Tina Howe, is set in the contemporary gallery of an art museum on the final day of a group show. The real "show," however, is the parade of nearly forty visitors as they interact with one another and react wildly to all they see. MUSEUM looks at people looking at art - to hilarious and moving effect. The play calls for a large cast (in this case 21 Upper School students), most of whom play two roles. It's well worth a visit to this MUSEUM!

Dear Parents:

I am writing to remind you that the June exam schedule should be followed as published on Sidwell Friends all-School calendar. Find the schedule below. All exams start at 8:30 am, June 1-8. Please call the Dean of Students Office, (202) 537-8160, if your child is sick or running late during exam week.

· Friday, June 8th at 9 am: Make-up day for exams missed due to illness.

· Students doubling up in a subject matter should communicate with their teachers and arrange their second test schedule.

· If a student has a make-up exam due to illness and/or unusual circumstances, he or she should contact the Academic Dean.

· Any deviation from the schedule of exams must be approved by the Academic Dean.

News from the Nurse

This is a gentle reminder that if you have not done so already, please login to the Magnus Health Portal, to begin completion of your child(ren)’s Vital Health Record(s) and download health forms for their upcoming physical appointments. All health forms are on the Magnus Health portal. If you have not received your login information for Magnus Health, you must contact their support desk as soon as possible. Call toll free: (877) 461-6831.

Back-to-School Health Form Guidelines for DC Campus Students

Physical Evaluation Form

- All students must have a physical exam within the 2012 calendar year. If the student’s birthday or appointment falls between September and December, a parent may request a note from the pediatrician stating the student is “cleared to participate in sports/attend school” and include the date the new physical exam is scheduled.

- Upload this note to the Magnus Portal under the Physical Evaluation Form link. In addition, you are still required to submit the Physical Evaluation Form once the appointment has occurred.

- No student will be allowed to participate in any school-related activities including preseason sports, academic classes, rehearsals, etc. if the School does not have the appropriate form on file with Magnus.

D.C. Department of Health Immunization Requirements

Please note the latest immunization schedule. Please consult with your pediatrician to discuss options. If you choose to have your child(ren) opt out, please note that you are required to submit proof of exemption as follows:

- For the HPV vaccine required for all girls entering 6th – 8th grade, make sure that you have completed the HPV opt out form posted on the Magnus Portal.

- For all other immunizations, ensure the doctor has completed either Section 2, or 3 on the 2nd page of the DC Health Form.

- Or complete the Religious Exemption Form on the Magnus portal for all other religious or personal reasons.

3rd Annual Tour De Friends!

Join us for a glorious day of bike riding and friendship in Rock Creek Park to help us raise money for student financial aid on Sunday, May 20th, at 9 am. Your participation includes rides of varying distances to be followed by food, drink, music, and plenty of give-aways!

Kick-off summer by playing in the Sidwell Friends School Golf Tournament!

The Sidwell Friends School Golf Tournament will be Monday, June 18, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Kenwood Country Club. Join fellow parents, teachers and alumni for a great day of golf while raising money for student financial aid. We welcome players of all levels and we encourage you to bring your family for a great day of golf and fun. Your afternoon on the course will be followed by a cocktail reception and award ceremony. Don't worry if you don't have someone to play with because we will be creating teams for people that sign up as an individual.

Spring Community Service Fair, May 21st

Monday, May 21, 6:30 pm - 8 pm: Georgetown Day School, Upper School Campus at Davenport Street NW - Volunteers Needed

SFS, Edmund Burke School and GDS are sponsoring a Spring Community Service Fair that is open to high school students and parents. Please join us at this event to learn about the various opportunities for students to participate in community service locally and abroad. For more information about this event and community service generally, please contact David Connell, (202) 537-8182. Volunteers (students and/or parents) are needed to help with set-up for this event. If you are available to help between 4:30 pm - 7:00 pm, please contact June Das Gupta junedasgupta@msn.com. Volunteers will be able to enjoy dinner with the organizers and heads of local nonprofits and community organizations attending this event.


PA Announcements

US Community Service Day (9th - 11th Grades)

Friday, May 18th, 8 am - 2:30 pm, Off-campus: Drivers Needed

Thank you to the parents who have volunteered for this event. Adult drivers are needed between 8 am and 1 pm to help with transporting our volunteers to and from the service sites. Drivers are not required to participate in the service projects, but would be welcome to do so. We are still looking for a few more drivers and would appreciate hearing from anyone who can help. If you can provide only pick-up or drop-off, we could still use your help - many drivers are needed to make this day a success! Please contact June Das Gupta with the number of passengers that you can transport, and any timing and/or location restrictions that you may have, and we will try to accommodate all requests as best as possible.
