HASSELBECK: we are happy to be back with the wife of the vice president, dr. jill biden. who's joined by her son and granddaughter who inspired her new children's book. please welcome beau biden and his 7-year-old daughter natalie. welcome! [ cheers and applause ] so, we are thrilled to have you both here. you know, i'm going to talk about the book don't forget, god bless our troops." Everyone will love this book.

DR. JILL BIDEN: thank you.

HASSELBECK: everyone will love this book.

DR. JILL BIDEN: thank you.

HASSELBECK: i know it was inspired by the two people sitting next to you. it began when tucking her into bed. you tell us the story.

DR. JILL BIDEN: well, actually, i wrote the book, traveling around the united states, i found many americans don't know the military family experience. and i wanted them to understand it. as an educator, i thought, how great would it be that parents could read it to their children. it could be in the classrooms and libraries. and then people would learn about the military experience. so, actually, the title from the book, and it's in the book, came from one night when i was putting natalie to bed. and we were saying our prayers. and as i was tiptoeing out of the room, she said, don't forget, nana, god bless our troops. and it was so pure and so beautiful. [ applause ]

WALTERS: you're a special girl, natalie.

WALTERS: do you like the book?

NATALIE BIDEN: yes

WALTERS: yes? do you think nana did a good job.

NATALIE BIDEN: uh-huh.

WALTERS: did you read the book yourself?

NATALIE BIDEN: yeah.

yeah. [ laughter ]

BEAU BIDEN: what happened when you first read it?

NTATALIE BIDEN: i got stuck on a couple words.

HASSELBECK: you did? that's okay, when you get stuck on a couple words, that means you get to learn a couple words, right? i always like that part, too.

WALTERS: i want to talk to your daddy a minute. mr. biden, beau, you served in iraq, 2009?

BEAU BIDEN: 2008-2009.

WALTERS: people don't realize there's only 1% of our population serving. it's a very difficult time. and the iraq war was a very difficult war to fight. how did they keep the morale up? you're so far away fighting an unpopular war, what do you say to them?

BEAU BIDEN: these are people who have signed up to do the job they're doing. the most remarkable women and men. i'm proud to be the attorney general of my state and even more proud to serve in the military. morale is not an issue in the united states military. whether it be iraq or afghanistan where i'm not. these are all people who volunteer to be in the army, who sign up for a job and they do it. i know you've seen it up close and personal, all of you, how remarkable these young men and women, and some not so young men and women, are doing a great job.

WALTERS: As I talk to you, there are people who say was this a war worth fighting?

BEAU BIDEN: is this a war worth fighting?

WALTERS: was this a war worth fighting?

BEAU BIDEN: look, i'm still in the military. i do what my commander in chief tells me to do. that's what all the men and women in the armed services do. that's what i do.

HASSELBECK: we are thankful for that.

WALTERS: i just want to follow this up. you say your commander in chief. you're the attorney general now of delaware? future plans? would you like to run one day as president?

BEAU BIDEN: i'm very happy to be -- i know your mother says --

DR. JILL BIDEN: if he were president, he'd be a wonderful president.

BEAU BIDEN: that's my mom talking. [ laughter ] [ applause ]

BEAU BIDEN: you know -- my life experience, barbara, you know have known me for a little while.

WALTERS: i have.

BEAU BIDEN: in my life experience, whoopi, you know this, too, i don't plan much beyond a year or two. i thought i'd be 40 years old in iraq, celebrate my birthday there. i really don't plan much beyond a few years.

GOLDBERG: i want to ask you -- go ahead.

GOLDBERG: i just want to know, what can you tell us, the folks who are not over there, and who don't know what went on. how can we help returning students, how can we make our voices heard? is it -- do we need to scream for more from the v.a.? do we need to make sure that the equipment you're taking is really up to par? how do we help y'all? what can we do?

DR. JILL BIDEN: well, i think -- i do cover that in the back of my book. yes, i hope people after they read this are inspired to say, hey, i want to do something.

WALTERS: and you give places where they can call and volunteer.

DR. JILL BIDEN: and I give suggestions to kids. to parents. the organizations that they can go to. schools. so that hopefully, when they read it, they'll say, hey, i want to commit to an act of kindness. and that's what our joining forces -- that i have with the first lady is all about. but thank you for asking. thank you.

HASSELBECK: there's a line that's repeated in the book that really touched me. it kept saying, "be brave, natalie." natalie, i have to say you are one of the most brave young women out there. we're so glad that you're here today. i want to ask you about a year. you had a year that your daddy was in iraq, on the day that he came back, i want you to tell us how you felt -- first of all, i don't know how you slept the night before, did you? What was that hug like when your dad came back that day?

NATALIE BIDEN: um -- i got -- daddy picked me up. me and my brother up and hunter rested his head on his head. and i rested my head on his shoulder.

HASSELBECK: will you ever forget that day?

NATALIE BIDEN: no.

HASSELBECK: that's a big smile from you. it's amazing. this is the picture of that day. and as a mom --

DR. JILL BIDEN: yeah, amazing. amazing. this is what every military family goes through, isn't that right? and you know, when your loved one is away and deployed, you just can't wait for that day when they return home safely. and that's what every military family --

BEAU BIDEN: there are moms and dads, brothers and sisters who have done multiple deployments. there are a lot of families out here who have had it tougher, tougher hauls than us. this is just an example of one family among many, many others who are much braver and tougher than ours quite frankly.

HASSELBECK: you're a family an incredible one. this book will speak to all families. everyone will love this book. i say that with pure heart. we want to thank dr. jill biden, beau, and natalie biden. We love you. everyone in the audience is especially fortunate because you are taking home a copy of dr. biden's new book!
