_JEFFREY GOLDBERG_: In Syria, the Obama administration is fighting a battle.
Unfortunately for the Syrian opposition, the administration's arsenal
consists largely of the adjectives it deploys to describe Hafez al-Assad's
various atrocities. “At the risk of deepening U.S. involvement in this very
complicated conflict, my suggestion is that Obama and his team conduct a
‘surge’of new adjectives and adverbs in their campaign, including such words
as ‘callous,’‘merciless,’‘pitiless’-- and even, perhaps, ‘barbarous.’”

_NOAH FELDMAN_: “Brig. Gen. Mark Martins is an honorable man with an
impossible job: Convicting Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his associates of the
Sept. 11 attacks without making it look like a show trial.” [Link]

_MARK BUCHANAN_: The 2010 joint report by the Commodities Futures Trading
Commission and the SEC on the May 6, 2010 flash crash, in which the Dow lost
and regained about 600 points in minutes, misinterpreted the data. Evidence
now suggests the crash wasn’t caused by an unusual shock to the market but
“by the inherent instability within the ecology of high-frequency trading. .
. . Something similar -- or worse -- could happen again.” [Link]

_MICHAEL KINSLEY_: Edward Conard, Mitt Romney’s former partner at Bain
Capital, is a counterexample to his own theory that the rich should pay
fewer taxes because they contribute so much to society. “His rapid
accumulation of huge wealth did not cause him to buckle down and work even
harder." In fact, Conard retired at 51. In addition, Conard fails to
understand a basic fact about the economy: "There is a necessary distinction
between riches gained through truly productive, socially beneficial
activity, and riches from activities that just enrich the actor.” [Link]

_SALLY SATEL_: Facebook performed a public health service by encouraging its
users to register online to become organ donors and share their donor
status. “What we’ll need to complement Facebook’s breakthrough effort is
another revolutionary move: incentives for living donors.” [Link]

_THE EDITORS_: “Germs have found a way to outfox antibiotics.” To combat
this resistance, the international medical community should support the
creation of new antibiotics and keep antibiotic sales tightly managed.

insist that Germany back down from its single-minded insistence on punitive

President Obama and Mitt Romney come up short on courage when it comes to
