Letter from Aleta Margolis, Executive Director

At Inspired Teaching, we are dedicated to transforming the role of teachers from
information providers to Instigators of Thought. We want all students to achieve
at high levels in classrooms where they are challenged to ask, investigate, and
answer questions instead of being passive recipients of knowledge. This quarterly
newsletter will provide you with relevant news, program highlights, and information
about our work.

The calendar year may be winding down for most schools, but at Inspired Teaching,
it's cranking up. We're entering our busiest training season and looking forward
to helping teachers build a better school experience for their students in the
2012-13 school year. Be sure to read Inspired Teaching in Action for more details.

We're also working to meet the June 30 challenge grant goal set by the William G.
McGowan Charitable Fund. More information on this important milestone and the work
of the McGowan Charitable Fund is in our Philanthropy Spotlight.

Philanthropy Spotlight

Inspired Teaching has the privilege of working with the William G. McGowan Charitable
Fund, which was established in 1992 to promote, nurture, and fund promising programs
in education, health care and medical research, and community programs.

Thanks in part to support from the McGowan Charitable Fund, Inspired Teaching has
been able to place passionate, effective teachers into new schools throughout DCPS,
bringing high quality teaching and learning to underserved, high-needs students.
Through our professional development and ongoing mentoring and support, these Inspired
Teachers have learned how to raise student achievement and create the type of learning
opportunities where students thrive.

We are thrilled to be the recipient of a $150,000 challenge grant from the McGowan
Charitable Fund. Contributions made to Inspired Teaching by June 30, 2012 from new
donors will be matched dollar for dollar; increased gifts from current supporters
will also be matched.

Our certification program recruits, selects, prepares, mentors, and certifies highly
qualified Inspired Teaching Fellows to teach in DC Public Schools. We received six
applications for every available slot in Cohort 4, which will begin in July and
will follow a residency model.

Our 17th annual Inspired Teaching Institute will run from July 9-20. This intensive,
year-long professional development program challenges middle and high school teachers
of all academic subjects to build student achievement and meet standards (including
Common Core) in creative and truly effective ways.

In partnership with DCPS, Inspired Teaching is providing in-depth training in content
area literacy, Common Core State Standards, the Inspired Teaching approach, and
the Literacy Design Collaborative framework for DCPS social studies teachers in
grades 5-9.

In partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools, Center for Inspired Teaching
is providing our transformative model of professional development to Baltimore
City's middle school math teachers. We are helping improve teachers' attitudes
toward math; building teachers' in-depth knowledge and understanding of
the Common Core State Standards in math; strengthening inquiry-based instruction
in math; and setting the stage for system-wide improvement in mathematics learning
for students at the middle school level.

Inspired Teaching Demonstration School

In 2011, Inspired Teaching opened a school to showcase our model of teaching and

students learn through an academically challenging, standards-based curriculum that
supports and builds their intellect, inquiry skills, imagination, and integrity.
The school also serves as a professional learning community where Fellows enrolled
in our Inspired Teacher Certification program work alongside Lead Teachers in each
classroom.

There is much to celebrate as we close out our first school year. More than 800
families applied for enrollment in the 2012-13 school year; new teachers have been
hired; and with the support of Inspired Teaching's research department, the school
is currently compiling and analyzing all of our student achievement data for the
year.
