PETER BOONE and SIMON JOHNSON: Can the euro be saved? Not likely. As
austerity measures fail, the European Central Bank will come under
pressure to take actions that create inflation, which will weaken the
euro. European leaders should prepare for an “orderly dismantling of
the euro before the damage spreads and further undermines European

EDWARD CONARD: “Pundits often wonder why median wages have failed to
rise in proportion to increased levels of productivity, as they have in
the past. The answer is obvious: The median wage is the highest wage of
the lowest 50 percent of workers, and productivity growth has occurred
predominantly at the top of the wage scale.” [Link]

THE EDITORS: JPMorgan Chase's $2 billion trading loss is another
advertisement for the Volcker rule. The final rule should “require
banks to put stricter boundaries around trading activity with a risk
profile that includes estimates of losses under various worst-case
scenarios.” [Link] And THE EDITORS want to make sure that the money
the U.S. donates abroad actually accomplishes some good. Randomized
trials “can help sort promising projects from truly effective ones in a
