the Chinese government has become extremely skilled at lending in a very

_GERALD RAFSHOON_: Mitt Romney's attack that "even Jimmy Carter would have
given that order" to kill Osama bin Laden is laced with even more
forgetfulness than condescension. Carter, in fact, did give a similar order
-- in 1980 to rescue American hostages in Iran – in addition to taking many
other courageous stands. Romney, in contrast, "has shown no such conviction,
no such courage, and no such strength." [Link]

_TOM VALASEK_: European Union leaders used a boycott of the Euro 2012 soccer
tournament set to take place in Ukraine this June to send a political
message: "Ukraine cannot build an authoritarian system without burning
bridges to the EU." [Link]

_JONATHAN ALTER_: Forget "conservatives" and "liberals.” This presidential
election pits venture capitalists against human capitalists. Mitt Romney
wants to slash taxes so the wealthy can have venture capital to invest in
business; President Obama believes the government should invest in human
capital through education, health care and infrastructure. [Link]

credible source of fashion rather than merely apparel?" [Link]

_STEPHEN CARTER_: The 153 bills in Congress with the word "emergency" in the
title diminish the term's power and make it difficult to draw distinctions
and set priorities. "The time has come to declare a state of emergency to
stop the absurd overuse of the term emergency." [Link]

_THE EDITORS_: Now that Fannie and Freddie are on the mend, it's time to
create a "smaller, less taxpayer-dependent mortgage market." President Obama
should create an independent government agency to provide insurance on
mortgage-backed securities issued by private-sector entities. [Link] And
in Europe, _THE EDITORS_ write, euro-area countries should "create a common
unemployment insurance fund, which would give struggling members an economic
boost as they liberalized their labor markets." [Link]
